| Poor Baci..sorry so long So its been awhile since I have had to start a post in this forum, but I need your help. The other day Baci started shaking his head and itching a lot. I recently have been volunteering at an animal shelter and was afraid I brought something home. Even though he is on preventative, I searched him for fleas and mites. Nothing came up. So while I was at work, he threw up and my dad got worried and had my mom take him to the vet. He has the startings of ear infections and one of his anal glands was infected. (mind you he was JUST at the vet for his exam 2 weeks ago today and was perfectly fine) My mom mentioned the once he threw up to her and everything. He is acting normal. The vet gave him ear drops and an antibiotic called Simplicef. When I came home with him I gave him his meds, and he ate a tiny bit. We went outside and he was going crazy eating peices of grass. Early this morning he threw up all that grass. (He is still acting normal) He has continued to eat grass so I have been keeping him inside. However, he wont eat his food or even treats and has now thrown up a couple more times, but almost like dry heaving because nothing is really coming out, just a little liquid. I feel so aweful and I am not sure what to do. It is the long weekend so vet help will be tough. Have any of you experienced these symptoms with these meds or ear infections or anything?? Any help would be apppreciated. ps. He has never had any anal glad problems at all. I know its common in yorkies but why now?and not earlier.

| It sounds to me as if he was sick to his stomach before he was seen and diagnosed with an ear infection and infected anal glands. The fact that he was eating grass immediately tells me it is not the meds. His tummy is upset. Can you call your vet? I would be concerned since he is vomiting that he might dehydrate. Check his gums...make sure they are wet to the touch. If they are dry and tacky feeling, he is dehydrating. My vet recommends Pepcid for upset tummies, but not when there is vomiting. (You might want to ask your vet about that for future reference for upset stomach. )

| Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't he vomiting prior to taking the antibiotic? I realize he also vomited after...but sounded like immediately after which would make me think the vomiting is not from that. I would be concerned if my dog continued to have vomiting...dehydration in these little ones can come on quickly.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Some antiboitics cause the dogs to become anorexic...and with nothing on their tummies they sometimes vomit. The vet can give you meds to increase his appetite or you could try feeding a bland diet of chicken and rice.

| Is he having normal poops? Some diet changes can cause anal gland problems. Adding green beans (I use frozen and almost liquefy in the blender) will add fiber (helps AGs) and may curb his want for grass. Also you can offer chicken baby food for a few days (Gerber stage 2)... good for giving pills too. Sometimes I'll give 2 teaspoons of baby food, wait 15 min or so to see if it stays down. If it does, then offer some chicken and rice (ratio 1:1) . The BF can stimulate the appetite. Vomiting within 30 minutes of taking a antibiotic is usually the AB not sitting well with that individual dog... plan the doses so you can keep him in for an hour after dosing, to be sure he keeps the meds down. If he vomits within 30 minutes of getting the AB, call your vet, they will give him a different AB. Keeping a diary with foods, meds, and times, and vomiting, bowel movements can help figure things out.

If he's not pooping bc of anal gland pain, getting backed up could cause the grass craving and vomiting, as can fever and infection. I totally agree that dehydration is a major concern. This pup needs to be monitored closely for food and water intake and output, and any medicine reactions. If all systems are not functioning properly with 24 hours, I'd take him back to the vet. Vomiting and grass craving can happen with foreign body ingestion, and a host of other illnesses/problems. My apologies... I could have been clearer in my first post.

| Oh, no need for an apology. I just kept seeing posts about antibiotics causing vomiting and my concern was that something else might be going on.

| Allergies Studies show a correlation between allergies and infected anals. With the fast onset of the ear infections and the infected anal it could be an allergy. In the spring and fall is the most common time for allergies, it is possible this is what set it off. The vomiting is most likely due to the anal gland pain making your baby upset. It helps to use a warm cloth on the bum to help bring the antibiotic to the area faster and they usually like it. Also keeping the anals expressed every 2 to 3 days helps the infection clear up much quicker. |

| Update Thanks to everyone who responded! Thats why I love it here! Yesterday I called the vet and asked them about Bacis behavior and they wanted to see him so I brought him back in. They gave him liquids because he was dehydrating and then gave him meds to calm his stomack along with prescription food to put him on for a couple days. She did take him of the antibiotic for his anal gland until we fixed the upset stomach. He didnt have a fever but my little cookie monster wouldnt even eat a cookie! She said if he kept vomiting I would have to bring him to the emergency vet because no one is open sunday and monday. Luckily the meds helped calm his stomach. He ate the cookie I tried to give him in the morning to get him to eat something. He hid it in his bed for later pickings. :-) So when he started to come around and i took him out i realized it was gone. So then I gave him a tablespoon of the food and he ate it. He has been drinking and eating. Still not his "normal" self but thats understandable after not feeling well and dry heaving all morning. Today is a little better and it seems we are on the right track. Still keeping him on the precrip food until tomorrow and then we will restart antibiotic tuesday! Thanks for all your input I really appreciate it!

| I'm so glad he's feeling better. I think it hurts us more - not really nowing what's going on than anything else. Also, I wanted to thank all the experts that responded to this post and help out. Not only did you help the OP with her little guy but you have also educated me quite a bit. Thank you. |
