| Anyone know about dentists? I'm taking Daisy for a consult on Tuesday to a board certified dentist. She cracked her 4th molar and it is loose and it likely must come out. However, as Daisy has many conditions including probable MVD, IBD, and severe allergies, we did routine blood work screening to see if she could have surgery, if surgery was recommended. Daisy's blood work is horrible - her liver enzymes are worse than they have been since she was diagnosed as probable MVD. They were perfect 3 months ago, and nothing has changed. Her BATs that will be done early next week are expected to be elevated as well, and with her ALT where it is, I am guessing I'll get a post-prandial reading over 100 again. Does anyone know if the tooth can be removed without putting the dog under? I am pretty sure that she can't have any preanesthetic drugs either - valium and the like are always out of the question for liver shunt dogs. I'm sitting here wondering how they can treat her tooth - internist thinks it must come out. Anyone been to a dentist and if so what do you know? Thanks.

| I have only been to the regular vet where they put them under before a cleaning. I know in CA they will do cleaning w/o putting them under, but I don't know about pulling a tooth. I would think it would hurt way too much. Good luck and post what you find out

| Thanks wrenee, I certainly will post the experience on Tuesday after the visit. We have a very early visit and I'm pretty excited actually - seems interesting. I'm trying to be optimistic about Daisy's liver values too - maybe this is just an infection, I'll know more after repeating blood work and doing BATs.

Poor Daisy! I hope they will help her to feel as little pain as possible. Do you know how she cracked her tooth? Sending hugs to your beautiful Daisy. I did not even know that there was a board certified dentist for our babies.

| Lady was just masked down for her last dental because of her liver issues, but all she needed was a cleaning. |

Yes - she broke her tooth on a marrow bone. I learned too late from the dental technician that animal bones are the worst for cracking teeth along with Hooves since they are very calcified and hard when they reach the stores. Ice is another culprit for cracked teeth. In Daisy's case, due to poor breeding, she lost about 6 teeth at less than 2 years old and every now and then it seems another few are missing. The 4th molar is cracked down the middle like a slab fracture and it is loose. Yes, there are two board certified veterinary dentists at the MSPCA- Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston and that is where I am going on Tuesday. They do routine dental cleanings as well as high risk situations. The cost of the cleanings seem to be in line with regular vets but I imagine the xrays etc will jack the pricing up. I guess for a younger dog you might be able to just do a cleaning. I like the fact that there is an anesthesiologist on staff for surgeries there - I feel Daisy will have the best option for pain management to address this situation.

| Manolo has MVD and just had a Dental about 3 months ago. His Blood panel came out fine. What are you feeding? What does your vet think? |

She is not showing clinical signs of liver disfunction which makes this all really perplexing. We are all very surprised.

| They can pull baby teeth with local, I think. Permanent...that'd be hard. It's probably possible, but I imagine I would stress her out really badly. She can be masked down with Iso if the dentist thinks it has to come out now. We've never seen a BC dentist, but Ellie's regular office has dental xray. It wouldn't be necessary for just getting a tooth pulled, but probably would be if you want to talk about just local being used.
