| Back from vets How to feel really guilty, if it was not for Buddy getting well through running through the grass I would not of noticed his swollen bottom, phoned vet for emergency advise as by now this bump had burst and blood was everywhere, vet told me it was an abcess and told me what to do, he's a really good vet, really cares for animals. Today took buddy to vets to find out he has a anal gland abcess and we could be in trouble if the abcess does not burst by weekend, we have medicine for buddy and unfortunately he is barred from our bedroom during day till it's over, apparently they are not nice when they burst. So fingers crossed it happens soon, as not seeing him I'll. X

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Nikki my male just got over one. When I noticed it it had already burst. The vet put antibiotics in the anal abcess and cleaned out his glands. He was on antibiotics for 10 days and had his second recheck a week ago and was fine. I also put some antibiotic cream on the outside sore. Hope your baby heals quickly.

| Soak cotton ball in warm Epson salts solution, apply to bottom three or four times a day for about ten minutes each time. With an antibiotic from vet, baby will be fine. If you can't get to vet, this will open the abcess and keep it draining.......that's what's important. Then apply something like Neosporim. Follow up with antibiotic from vet. For a baby that's inclined to have anal gland problems, doing this on a regular basis may keep an abcess at bay! Works for me! |

| Andromeda has had anal ruptures twice. Consequently, I have learned some methods to keeping the anal sac's from getting impacted. When you bath your pup, put them in a little tub where they can sit down and soak for awhile. I do this with Andromeda everytime she gets a bath. It has really helped. Good luck! |

| Buddy received an injection in his bottom, which he certainly didnt like and two lots of meds, one is liquid form, which is so easy to get down him and tablets the size of dinner plates, but I will take onboard the epsom salts and the bath routine, he usually only has a shower, but why do they happen, the vet could not really tell me

| Goodness! I'd think anal glands and their function would be Vet School 101...they become impacted when they fail to empty normally. Impaction does occur more often in smaller breeds.....Just add checking the glands to your daily grooming list and things should be fine from here on! |

| This is what I find strange, his stools are normally solid, never had a problem, but after this is over, how do you check on a daily basis, never done this before?

| Hold up the tail, place your thumb and forefinger at the five and seven o'clock positions outside the circumference of the anus. If the sacs are full, you should be able to feel them, about the size of a pea. I never empty them myself, too chicken, but get the vet/vet tech to do it. But first, if I do feel something there, I'll try the Epsom Salt treatment and often, that will save a trip to the clinic! |

| Sometimes their diet can cause anal gland issues... try adding some fiber... may help his glands to empty on their own.
