Default New Boy struggling to ppop

Hi, I am Ice and a new Yorkie mom and new poster. I got Danny-Boy on Saturday and he has just turned 7 weeks. After a day or so, I saw him struggling to poop and nothing coming out. I took him to the vet who gave him an enema and put him on a deworming course.

He got the enema last night, he has vomited a little when we got home (he ate just before we went to the vet and did not vomit a lot either). The problem is he refuses to eat or drink anything since then. I tried the pumkin which he loves, and not even that! I have gave him some water with a syringe at least to keep him hydrated as he only weighs 500grams.

I slipped him into my office at work today, to keep an eye on him. He again struggled to poop with nothing coming out. So I washed his bum with a bit of lukewarm water and massaged his bum softly with a wet cloth. He had a few good "goes" after that - but now I see brighred blood in the poo. The poo is not like diarhee, but not completely firm either.

I am taking him to the vet again after work, but would appreciate anyone's comment especially if they have had similar experiences.

It is like having a firts baby!!

Hi and Welcome to YT!

Sorry your puppy is having problems. He's a bit young to be away from his Mom yet. Better for him if he stayed till 12 weeks old.

You did good with stimulating him to poop with the damp rag. His butt may get sore so a triple antibiotic ointment may help to soothe it.

The blood is of some concern, but may be from irritated intestines. You may want to try to stimulate him to poop a few more times before you leave work.

It may be the change in food that has him stopped up. If he strains too much without going, and is still vomiting and not going, definitely take him back to the vet. He may have eaten something not food and it may be blocking him. If he seems real lethargic, I'd take him back asap. If he's not eating or drinking, I wouldn't wait too long. Good Luck, let us know how he does at the vet's.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help...

Also you may want to take in a poo sample today with you. They can check it for coccidia. hope your baby is feeling better soon!

Default Update on Danny-Boy

Hi

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the advise.

I took Danny-Boy back to the Vet and because he is so small and dont want to eat and worse, not drink, (and his feces seems to be very soft inside) the vet suggested that he stay in hospital and be put on a drip. This should hopefully help and we should have him back within 2 or 3 days. So please hold thumbs that my little baby will be okay. I already miss his attention seeking and cuddling!! I can phone the vet by about 11hoo tomorrow morning and will keep you posted. He was in good spirits though, despite not eating and drinking, so I am sure he's a little toughie!

It sounds like the young puppy is stressed out. Good thing you have a vet "on hand" . I do not release my puppies usually before they turn 12 weeks old ... and here we have laws that say no puppy can be sold before 8 weeks.
But lots of TLC and love will help your little baby , lets keep good spirits, he is in good hands too.
XOXO

Default Thank you

Smartpuppiepets: I have obviously not done my homework re Yorkies well enough before I got him> It was my thoughs exactly that he might be stressed. He was the tiniest of the litter, taken from his mom maybe way too early, new home etc etc!

I just really hope he is okay - its unbelievable how quickly you fall in love with them! And how quickly they become a part of you. My worries is that he hardly knows us and now he is separated from us already?!

I went onto your website and one of the pics of your pups looks just like him! (the one with someone holding the chain)!

Any nutrition / feeding advise when we get him back would really be helpfull as u seem to know your stuff! I feed him Royal Canine for Junior - he seems to prefer it dry. And after I thought he looked constipated at first gave him pumpkin and he loved it.

I was told not to feed him anything else except maybe boiled chicken. But I have seen so many other things on the web, that it is really confusing! That is why I feel like a first time mom all over again.

I am SO gonna miss him cuddling up with me tonight!! Not even maybe getting a full nights rest in a few days will make up for it!

Keep well - till next time!

Well, i did not want get on you for taking him too young because you are on the other side of the planet, and things are different on different countries. But you seem to be right on track now !
The food advice i give is the same you have already been given: dry premium food only ! That is how my pups leave my home, and royal canin is a good food, so keep up on that. Boiled home made chicken for treats.
I only use the pumpkin if i see anything wrong ... but not often.
He is too young so the vet may give you some different advice when you bring him home. As long as he has his vaccines and there is no horrible virus infection going on , he should be fine.
All the symptoms you describe leads to stress, so lets keep our spirits up and hope for the best . Love is the best remedy for stress and you sure can give that.
The vet will keep him hydrated and treat for nasty opportunistic parasites, you probably have giardia and coccidia there like we have here. But again, the protocols there may be different from here because of geographic location.
Ask your vet about hypoglicemia remedy , if you can have nutrycal , or something alike on hand will be good too.
Other than that you seem to have good help, you sure did the right thing bringing right to the vets.
Keep us posted and sure, i am up to give you advice any time.
I adore those little furr balls.
XOXO

Welcome to YT and congrats on your tiny baby! I'm so sorry the little guy has to go through all that already and I hope he is feeling and doing better already.

Having a highly allergic and picky eater with a very sensitive digestive system we went through tons of different foods and I did quite some research on it. We are now feeding Orijen and we have the best results ever. Maggie likes it (first big win,) she tolerates it very well (no diarrhea anymore) and her itchies are minimal. I hope this helps.

Default Update on Danny-Boy 22 July 2010

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your much needed support! I have just phoned the vet and the good news is that he has not developed diarhee and is not worse off that he was.

The bad news is, that he is still not wanting to eat and drink. He has also not passed a stool yet to monitor. They are currently forcefeeding him and say he is a cute little thing! He is still on the drip and they would keep him on for now.

Everything in me says to go and fetch him and take off work and just give him so much love and attention and he will get better, but I also dont want to take the chance of him getting worse and I am sure he is in good hands. (Although I am also sure he does not get all the attention I think he needs now...)

The worse news off course is that he still has to say and cannot cuddle up with me!!!

I am in misery!!

Till next time, please keep us in your thoughts!

Default Update on Danny-Boy 22 July 2010 (2)

Hi ...again!

I just phoned again to ask the Vet if they have tested him for the hypoglycemia and coccidia - I have spoken to the Vet himself and he said he is defnitely looking better than what he did yesterday. They just want to get him to a stage where he will eat himself.

Smartpuppypets - you ever considered becoming a vet?? LOL The vet told me that they do believe it was a case of hypoclycemia and that when I get him back I should feed him at lease every 2-3 hours untill he is a bit bigger and can be fed less a day.

So - I guess this means that somehow I will have to get around my boss and bring him to work.

So lets hope a speedy recovery for my little boy so he can get back home!

Yorkie-Greetings

Glad he is doing better, but not eating is a big concern. When my Cali was a puppy she wouldn't eat either and had several hypoglycemia episodes. I found a canned food that she would eat and fed her every 2-3 hours at first and then every 3-4. After she was more stable and older I switched her to a premium dog food. At this point you just need to find a food he will eat. Sounds like you are doing everything right. Keep us posted.

Heheh.. you are good

Glad to hear the good news ! The vet is a caring one and was very sharp, he acted fast before the puppy went very weak. Do not be too anxious to get him back, to force feed a puppy is not a horrible thing, it is done all the time and soon the puppy will be eating on its own. But if you do not know how and when to force feed you can do more harm than good. I am not sure if you have the same brands of food in there as we have here. If you do your vet is probably using A/D or Recovery to force feed, these are very easy to digest. He may give you some to take home with you and that is good. Just ask him. If he is using another brand ask anyways and he will sell you some to take home, slowly you will start mixing the dry food again... but i am sure your vet will coach you through it !
So gald all is going well...
XOXO

Default Visit to the Vet

Hi there,

Been to the Vet after work (he is gonna start praying for a miracle! because of this mom being on his case!)

I saw my little guy - they allowed me to see him out of visiting hours and said I can drop by anytime! I am highly impressed with their effieciency and empethatic attitude. And the fact that he is on a heated blanket too. (just shows you how much I know about vets!

My little one looked okay and I realised how tiny he actually is after they brought him to me with the drip still attached. They woke him up and He just cuddled he's nose into my scarf (its winter here) and i spoke to him, even prayed and stroked him gently. He was quite content.

His glucose (?) level is at 3.2 and the vet said for such a tiny pup they would like to have it about between 3 and 7 , but that they are not happy with the 3.2 - rather higher. They will also administer (cannot remember the name) for the parasite - thingy.

They are feeding him A/D and I will defenitely ask for some when we get him back.

I am expecting though a rather big bill too! LOL! So there goes my aspirations of paying off my credit card!! LOL I think I should perhaps think about petsure medical aid.

He is sill not eating or drinking on his own and have not passed another stool....

But my hopes are high, now that I have seen what he looks like. Will leave it in the hands of the pro's till he is well and able!

I cannot believe how he has influenced my life! I think I have lost a few kg's (pounds in your terms) And how becoming a member on here has given me hope too!

Thanks again!

May be you are been moderated just because you are new here and posted 2 times on same thread??? Something like that i am sure ! They just like to check things out.
Glad to hear he is doing well, no poops is better than too much poops...
Have you thought about asking the breeder to help you out on the vet bills? You may entitled to help from the breeder depending on the situation, local regulations, contract and what you 2 have agreed between one another.
So it is worthy investigate this option a bit. Also ask the vet if they will offer you a no interest payment plan, or something like the "CARE CREDIT" WE HAVE HERE... a no interest plan can help a lot and if you are happy you sure will not only keep coming back, but will give them 2 tons of good referrals ...
They are always considerate of that .
I am also learning a lot with your posts ... A/d is a good food, we have it here in America, but when i moved here it was not found in my home country ... i am not sure of today ... globalization is changing the world !
XOXO
