Yorkie Yakker | pancreatitis Taking Kona to the vet again tomorrow. Blood in stool and eating grass like crazy! He also had 1 bout of just total blood! He is on flagyl but not sure things are getting better. 2 bouts of vomiting but he doesn't seem to be in pain? Vet is thinking possible pancreatitis. I keep reading about the cPLI test as being the sure diagnostic blood test....but I also read that it is only done in Texas? Is this true? $$$$$$ Also as far as the low fat diet, what is the % of fat that I should be looking for in the food if he indeed does have pancreatitis? His current food says 16% fat (minimum). WTH does that mean....."minimum"?

| The Spec cPL is done at Idexx and I'm sure Antech does them too. You vet should be able to do it. Some vets have SNAP cPL in office too. It will be $40 give or take. Fat recommendations vary by patient but are much lower than 16% for the most part. However, it may not be pancreatitis at all.

| Pancreatitis usually is accompanied by pain. My dog Barney has had two life-threatening bouts of it. The first one was when he was about 5 and this one happened a few months ago (almost 5 years later). Both times followed consumption of Wellness chicken and sweet potato (purple can) which is higher in fat (22.72%). Since he is now considered "prone" to it, he is on a low fat diet - 3% fat for several months - and then it will be raised to about 6% fat. We home cook for him and he is doing great. Keep us posted!

| Sounds like Colitus (sp). Beginning symptoms...Bloody stool, sometimes just bloody, with an odor, some vomitting but not an unusually large amount, still eating and does not seem to be in extreme pain?

Yorkie Yakker | Does not seem to be having pain. I can push on his tummy and he could care less. The real interesting thing is the getting up at night (every 2 hours) to go out, then he just eats grass. He also has had some normal BM's mixed in with the blood. Last couple of stools have been just grass and mucus! He is drinking and wants to eat but I am being cautious with the food...... Have been giving him boiled chicken with barley.
