| 4 day old puppy on esbiliac...constipated!!?? My yorkie had to have a c section last week wednesday as she had some complications. I have been tube feeding a very very small little boy every few hours with esbiliac. I have another female who had puppies 2 weeks ago. She lets him nurse on her but i know he isnt getting enough from her. anyways... he had his tail docked and dew claws removed yesterday. After we got home, i fed him and let him nurse... i fed him one more time at 12am and since then, he has been crying... the whole night. I noticed every time i stimulate (with my finger or warm cloth) him to go to the bathroom, he cries. I think the esbiliac millk is causing him constipation. This morning, he will not latch on to the foster mommy. I dont know what to do and all the vets are closed! Any help will be appreciated. This little boy has come soo far .... i dont want to see him fade now!!! Thank you!! Amy |

| I AM NOT A VET, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN IN YOUR SHOES BUT, I have read and heard that a puppy that is constipated will usually go potty if you lube up an anal thermometer and "check" its temp ever so gently, and I have heard to use sterilized water in a "medicine syringe" and inject a tiny bit like an enema and they will go very soon........once again I am not a vet!!!

| When ever I've had to supplement, I've added a drop (based on the small amount you'll be giving right now) of Kayro syrup. It's the clear kind and that has an osmotic effect that will bring fluid back into the intestines and help soften it up. Unfortunately, other than continuing to stimulate and maybe putting a small amt of Kayro on your finger and rubbing in his mouth, my only other suggestion would be to contact a vet. |

| Canned goats milk, mix one part goat milk to one part water and a little corn syrup. |

Great advice. Just adding a couple of more things. Use distilled water. Esbilac and Just Born replacement milk are not recommended. There is an article on here that I posted as to the ramifications. Esbilac having cooper and can contribute to aquired shunt. Just Born can cause premature cataracs. The closets thing to mother's milk is goats milk. If pup is constipated a couple of natural glycerine in a an eyedropper inserted in the pups rectom can help. However, if the problem persists a vet visit is in order, as a consitipated puppy can be life threatening. Or you can attempt to diaper the pup with a warm cotton ball. Gently massaging the anal area.

| I agree with all the postings that Esbilac would NEVER be given to any of my puppies After 30 yrs. I have a wonderful formula for puppies, I even use it while Mothers are giving birth and weaning of the puppies Something that works wonders, hard to find, Is a baby laxitve called Fleatchers Castoria. Give ONE drop on the tongue put a warm cloth on their tummy, wait about 30 mins and try to stimulate the baby to go, if NO relief you can give another drop. It has saved many puppies for me and I would never be without it. It is all natural. You can usually find it at Walgreens. It is called The Milk Babies Cry For! I would also start giving the puppy, in addition to regular feedings, boiled cooled water on the hour in between the regular untill this problem is corrected. Sometimes they are constipated because they are dehydrated. If intrested in my formula, Vets even call my to ask for it, just email me and I'l be glad to send it to you sparklingbluyorkies.com Last edited by Sbyork; 06-06-2010 at 05:43 AM. |

| As I stated above, if you can find pure glycerine. Fill an eydropper and insert it into pup's rectum, and release a couple of drops (one-quarter cc). Massage anal area. Warm water can also be used and administered rectally with an eyedropper.
