| My 3 yr old Yorkie will not eat!!!! My 3 yr old Yorkie Gypsey has not ate anything for going on three wks now. She has been to the Vet 4 times now we force feed her with chicken gravy baby food, beef broth and pedilite. She has no fever does vomit ocassionaly clear liquid with white foam like substance, or yellow bile. we give her liquid with a needle under the skin in shoulders. We have tried everything we can think of, the Vet has told us, and still she will not eat. she has lost about 11/2 lbs. if you have any ideas please help. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | oh wow - The vet thinks this is ok and didn't keep her ? you said she lost 11 pounds - did you mean 1-1/2 lbs ? that's a terribly long time for any living creature to not eat - is she keeping anything down ? have you cooked her chicken and maybe some rice ? The vet needs to run additional tests to find out why this is happening - no dog can go without eating and there has to be an underlying cause good luck

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Wow that is a long time not to want to eat. HAve they done stomach Xrays? They may need to to exploratory surgery to see what is going on. You may need to get her to a specialist. The yellow bile could be from having an empty stomach. Has she been tested for liver shunts? Have they given her medicine for her stomach? Have you tried feeding her Cesar's little tins of food? Most dogs will eat that. I hope you can get some answers soon.

| She has lost 1 1/2 pounds, she was a 5 1/2 pd yorkie, before she got sick. Yes we have tried boiled chicken & rice. So did the Vet.. She was hospitalized for 5 days with him. They said she was eating kibble, so we picked her up. She did not eat though. We have kept her alive so far by feeding Chicken & Gravy Baby Food and Pedilite. She has also received Blood work twice and stool test. Have taken her to the Vet alot and called and spoke with him daily almost. Friday we got an IV Fluid so we can also keep her hydrated that way for now and another B12 shot. He tells us to keep feeding her she will come around. He said she has had a virus. |

| Yes Patti it is a long time.. I am really afraid of loosing her. He has done kidney test etc. I was trying a little broth this morning. She vomits at least once a day up to 4 times a day. No diarrah... Of course she rarely has stool no more than she gets. Although she seems to urinate fine. No fever either? |

| Is she having any other symptoms? Lethargic, seeming depressed anything else? Did they test her for addisons disease? It is not common, so they usually don't test for it, but sounds like the symptoms my dog had when she got sick.

| My dog had an addisons crisis about 3 years ago. It started with her not eating. I thought she was being a yorkie and being picky, but then I noticed she would barely even eat people foods that she loved. She lost weight and was lethargic and depressed. Started vomitting. Had to spend a week in the vet hospital and the very last thing they tested for was addisons which turned out to be what she had. What I do know is if it is addisons and it goes untreated, it is very life threatening. I would definately encourage you to at least ask your vet about it. Good luck, I know how awful it is to have a sick baby.

| Addison's disease symptoms - Symptoms of Addison's disease are very similar to other diseases and they seem rather vague. Symptoms may include but are not limited too; middle age female dogs, usually over 7 years of age, depression, lethargy, weakness, not eating, weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea, drinking more, urinating more, dehydration, and a fast heart rate in some patients. Many times these symptoms may go unnoticed or correctly diagnosed and the patient finally presents in a Addisonian crisis. During an Addisonian crisis the patient may present in acute collapse and in shock. This is very serious, deadly, and scary to watch. Blood work will show low sodium level, high potassium level, and high kidney enzymes. Many veterinarians will first think kidney failure, which is more common then Addison's, and will recommend IV fluids. The IV fluids will correct the electrolyte imbalance and the dog will start to feel a lot better. The veterinarian may then start to think the patient could have Addison's instead of kidney disease and recommend other tests. Diagnosing Addison's disease - Addison's is diagnosed by a series of blood tests. A chemistry panel will show a low sodium level, a high potassium level, the resulting Na:K ratio will be low. The kidney enzymes will be high. The Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test will give a definitive diagnosis for Addison's disease. The patient will need to be at the veterinary clinic for about 2 hours to complete the test. The test is done by drawing a sample for a baseline reading, a synthetic ACTH hormone (Cortrosyn) is given by injection, then a post blood sample is taken one hour later. Dogs with Addison's have a low cortisol concentration that will go unchanged even after the synthetic stimulation. Treatment for Addison's disease - Treatment consists of replacing the glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid steroids. The drugs of choice are usually Prednisone (glucocorticoid) and Percorten-V or Florinef (mineralocorticoid). The dose of Prednisone will taper over the course of a few weeks. It is very important that these drugs are given as prescribed. Did your vet do endoscopy, xray or ultrasound? it is true that addison dogs lose weight that is the one sign as my friends bull mastiff has addisons. But there blood work shows some signs as well for this but it does go undetected in alot of dogs as the vet never caught my friends dogs disease until he had an addison crisis. Her dog ate though just was losing weight so not sure. Has your dog had bile acid testing done for liver? was anything high or low on blood work? | |
