| Info on liver shunts from those w/experience Hello. I am a new member w/a newly diagnosed liver shunt in my 11 mo old, 4 1/2 lb yorkie. I have been reading everything I can find on this, have a wonderful vet, have located the only two surgeons here in TX who do this procedure, and am reading all I find here on this site. I have found that experience is by far the best teacher though. I would greatly appreciate any information, experience, knowledge and tips on this very scary medical road that Little Bit and I have just begun. Your experience may help me make the best decisions for my baby. Thank you and your prayers are greatly appreciated |

| You may want to look for liver shunt groups in the groups section of Yahoo. I joined a couple of Yorkie liver disease related Yahoo groups and they were most helpful. Just like YorkieTalk, The Yahoo groups are free. DJ had his liver shunt closed at 6 1/2 yrs old but he also had kidney problems which eventually caused his death at 7 1/2 yrs old.

| My dog Daisy has Microvascular Dysplasia (or, "MVD") which is microscopic shunting of the liver so her situation is a little different from yours. Nevertheless I have learned that Dr. Karen Tobias at the University of Tennesee is the BEST when it comes to liver shunt and having surgery there is much cheaper. They invented the surgical procedure of use of the ameroid constrictor so if it was my dog, that's where I'd be going. I'm going to bump this to S&I so you get additional input.

| Welcome to YT. Lots of Liver Shunt and MVD babies here Where are you going to have the surgery done? I ask, because Dr. Tobias at U of Tenn is the leader in LS Surgery, and quite a few people have traveled (and will travel) to U of Tenn to have this done. The cost is very inexpensive, I have seen quotes of approx. $1300 to $1800 (inlcuding all bloodwork, scintography, LS surgery, spay/neuter and baby teeth removal). Not bad at all. Can you tell us more about your baby? What are his BAT results? What "other" tests have you done to confirm a Liver Shunt? What food are you feeding? Is he on Lactulose and Antib's? Any liver support supplements? I do know you want to boost his immune system and try to get him as healthy as possible and no HE symptoms before the "big day" |

| I am in Houston an have a little girl that was diagnosed with liver shunt in February 2009. She was 13 months and 3.5 lbs. I took her in March 2009 to Dr Karen Tobias at University of Tenn. to have her shunt closed. They did the scintigraphy, closed the shunt, pulled her baby teeth and spayed her for much less money and I felt like she was in the very best hands that she could have been in. My vet referred me to Gulf Coast Surgery Center which was 5 minutes from my house in Houston and is probably very good, but they did not have the experience with these tiny babies that U of Tenn. I flew to Knoxville by myself with Lola on Wednesday evening and we flew home on Sunday morning. Lola did fabulous - she also has MVD, but is like a different dog. It was the absolute best thing we could have done with her. I also suggest that you join this support group, they have been such a great help to us! | Here's a good link: Portosystemic Shunts FAQ Also, the more experience a vet has with this surgery has a lot to do with how successful the outcome. My choice is UT.
