Fine yesterday, now diarrhea and vomiting! Spike was absolutely fine yesterday. When I woke up this morning he had diarrhea (several places in the house), and just before I left for work he vomited. He obviously isn't feeling well - although he got up when I did, he just stood in one spot and didn't wag his tail, which is unlike him! Any ideas?

| Please get him to the vet. It could be so many things, and these little ones can dehydrate quickly.

I just made an appointment for him for this afternoon. It's the lethargy that's worrying me. Sometimes they have diarrhea and vomiting, and you can tell that otherwise they feel just fine. This just seems more serious. Why can't dogs talk? Life would be so much easier if they could tell us, "I just feel a bit under the weather, no need to worry!"

I'm glad you made the vet appt. Hopefully it's just an upset tummy but when they are so small it's always better to get them to the vet. Don't want him to dehydrate then they go down fast. Good luck and don't forget to give us an update.

My neighbour just went to check on him (she has a Yorkie too), and he barked when he heard her come in, and met he at the door with a wagging tail (both good signs), but then he went back to his bed. So I'm a little less worried, but we're still going to the vet this afternoon. I will post an update when we're back!

Update! Just got back from taking Spike to the vet. He seemed a lot better when I picked him up that he did this morning, so that was definitely encouraging. He still seemed a bit sluggish, so I took him to the vet as planned, even though he was much improved. Dr. Howard could really only find two things. His temperature is a little high (although still in the "normal range"), and when she palpated his abdomen, he flinched a little. She also said it felt quite tense, although she wasn't sure if that was because his stomach was upset or if he was just nervous about her handling him. She gave him a injection of some medicine for any pain, and gave me some medicine that should help with the diarrhea. She also told me to feed him some bland food like rice, and see how he does with that. If he continues to improve then that will be that, but if he still seems to be having problems, she recommended bringing him back for an x-ray and perhaps some blood work. So far, all seems well, and we'll keep an eye on him! Last edited by daniellealberta; 05-13-2010 at 01:41 PM.

Update #2! Hi to all, Spike was not his usual self when I got home from work last night - he was better than he had been in the morning, but not as good as when I had taken him to the vet. I wasn't sure if it was because he was feeling sick, or because of the pain medicine the vet had given him - she warned me it might make him sleepy. Anyway, I made him some rice with some extra lean ground beef (bland food recommended by the vet to help settle his stomach). He rejected it completely. My cat, however, loved it and ate two saucers full. I gave Spike his medicine (liquid in a syringe - it took ten minutes), and we went to bed. This morning, he was much improved. He met me at the bed with wagging tail. He's still not as energetic as usual, but he was moving around the house much more than he was yesterday. Best of all - when I got some more beef and rice out for them, he jumped up and down and then gobbled down his share, so I was able to mix his medicine in with the food - so much easier! As far as I can tell, that's the first time he's eaten anything in over 24 hours, so it was good to see he's got his appetite back. I wouldn't say he's 100%, but he's definitely better. I'll keep giving him his medicine, and we'll keep an eye on him for the next few days!
