YT Addict | Jenna having diarrhea - dental tomorrow She goes in for her dental first thing tomorrow and I phoned the vet to make sure she should undergo the procedure considering she's had to defecate at least 8 times in the last 24 hours. (We went from constipated to this within a week...the perils of learning a new pets' preferences!) Each time it's been runny and sometimes foamy. Plus she's really started scratching her ears again. I'd given her some canned pumpkin last night that she licked off my fingers, but that seems to have come through undigested today. Poor bub was up all night and she looks exhausted (me too, I bet)...vet said to give her boiled rice, unseasoned ground beef and possibly small amounts of yogurt to help firm her up. I thought I'd post here though to see if anyone had other suggestions for helping our little girl get over this bad patch. BTW, I figure what set this off was trying to introduce a new canned food to her. I'm hoping (recalling how much she's had in the last 48 hours) that she'll be feeling better by tomorrow morning...either way the vet will assess if she's up for the dental at that time. Can I ask for good thoughts and healing vibes please, for our little Jenna. It seems like we were just getting to see her happier here with us after adopting her two weeks ago, now this. I feel terrible for messing up her care so badly! >.< Last edited by Jenna AK; 05-04-2010 at 03:17 PM. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Good thoughts and healing vibes coming your way. Instead of the boiled hamburger, i'd give boiled chicken with the rice and yogurt. that's just my preference though and some think the hamburger may be too fatty even if you skim and drain off all the fat you can see. I always give non fat plain yogurt when i think my pup is having an upset tummy and/or diarrhea.

| You are not messing up her care... dont be so hard on yourself. Sometimes it takes longer with some dogs to find a food that works for them and agrees with them. Keep the vet updated on her condition in the AM... as they may want to postpone or take special precautions if she is still sick! I am sending get better vibes to your girl

YT Addict | Well I just had a scary moment...she was in my lap and her body begins jerking, then she gets off my lap and starts coughing like she wanted to throw up. (She did try to vomit once yesterday as well.) Nothing came up though and she seems fine now. I noticed when she first came home with us she would look like she was hiccuping and I wondered if it was a reaction to stress? Now maybe I'm thinking it was a change in diet? I'll mention this to the doc too, but is there anything further I can/should do? Thanks again so much for the advice! |

| Mr. Buttons has gotten the runs from some thing in the backyard..He actually had it last week..It took one week to get rid of...Rice and Chicken only..good to go now...Its sooo sad to see them sick...Mr. B had the shakes and all of that, the first time this happened I went to the vet..And this time I knew what to do!! He is great this week! |

YT Addict | We'll give it a try. I do know she is not fond of chicken, however, hopefully I can convince her it's yummy. ^_^ I just worry about her not eating at all. Besides being picky you can tell that food doesn't appeal much at the moment. She is two years old or thereabouts...do I need to worry about hypoglycemia with her? |

| I would worry about the diarrhea first and than worry about hypoglycemia...lAfter you fix is tummy and than move onto figuring out the food...We give Mr. Buttons Royal cannin Dry food for Yorkies in the morning...And in the evening we mix it with a teaspoon of science diet wet food..I would stick with the rice/Chicken diet until he gets better..But if he starts to not eat or drink you need to go to the vet...They can get dehydrated quickly!!And make sure he has no worms or stuff in his poop too!! You can try ice chips!!! |
