| Bosco Question My yorkie bosco is 6 years old and I am worried about him. Two weeks ago we noticed his right leg just went out under him and he would not go up or down and steps. Took him to the vet who felt he was over weight and the legs could not hold him up (3lbs overweight) Put him on weight mgmt food. He also had a yeast infection in both of his ears and gave me drops for 14 days in addition gave me NSAID's 1/2 tab twice a day for pain. Well I started both treatments and noticed that he is best in the morning full of energy and no falling down. and then as day progresses he starts to have a hard time getting up , notice now it may be his left hind leg or his front one. He gets so scared when he falls down I have to pick him up. I initally thought it may have to do with the ear infection ( making him lose his balance) and that is why the NSAID's are working but I just dont know. The vet did no blood work, I read on this site about tick paralysis he was bit when he was a baby but was on antibioitc and I regualry put his flea and tick protection on him. He is eating drinking and passing his stool. I just dont know what the next step should be . Any insight would be greatly appreciated. |

| Hi and Welcome Back to YT! The next step would be to follow the vet's instructions, get the ear problem under control, and get some of the weight off him and reaccess him at that time. If he's still having problems, then more may need to be done. There's a good chance that fixing his ears and losing some weight could be all he needs right now. If, at any time, his symptoms get worse, or he developes new symptoms, I would call the vet to make him aware and to see if the vet needs to re-examine him. He may just be getting tired by afternoon/evening, hence his weakness causing falls/missteps. Try to schedule any of his strenuous activities for earlier in the day, and allow him ample rest time later in the day. Good luck with him, and keep us updated of his progress...

| I'm so sorry Bosco is having problems and will say a prayer for his recovery. I wonder is he could have a back injury. One of the first signs of back injury is the dog refusing to go up or down stairs. It does affect the legs which can become paralyzed. If you go back to your vet, ask him to do x-rays. It sounds a lot like my daughter's yorkie when he first came down with his problems which resulted in a ruptured disk. Best wishes to you! I hope you find answers!

This is very good advice. I was assuming your vet did a hands-on examination of his spine when you had him at the vets. If not, this should be investigated as it is a serious problem and shouldn't be overlooked.
