| hypoglemcemia Hello All: Ava is nearly three and we have just had a terrifying bout with an actual seizure from hypoglemicia. She is otherwise healthy and loves her dialy walks. It seems that the eposides happen after she has gotten into something ( bunny poop in the yard is what I think) then feels sick and won't eat that last meal of the day. The two previous episodes started early in the morning with what seemed like serious "cramps"that literally took the feet out from under her. She WILL eat and the vet says they know they have to as the blood sugars are dropping off. I would like to hear from anyone who has been thorugh this or is going through this. She seems off her food again (main food is the gastro from vet as her system never did tolerate much change) so have the Nutrical and Recovery but think now I am trying to overfeed her. It was very scary and would like to know if anyone has any little tricks or suggestions |

| She had extensive bloodwork done last Tuesday after episode and all is clear for liver. The first two episodes one occurred last summer than about a month ago)involved only these "cramps" and seemed to involve her whole body EXCEPT HER HEAD and she remained bright though fearful looking. That was the first question my vet asked was if she seemed unfocused or out of it in any way. This third go around it started with this "cramping" and she still wanted to eat ( my vet says they know they need food and will eat if given the chance). The problem seemed to be that in the few minutes it took for the food to metabolize she actually experienced a seizure that lasted about 45 seconds. She was a bit confused after that but spent the day at the vet's for blood work and observation. Took a few days to fully come around but has been pretty much herself the last few days. She has always had a good breakfast around 7 AM, goes walking when weather permits, some lunch around noon and then the final meal of the day about 5-6 with yet another mile walk when the weather is good. Every one of these has been after her stomach was upset for some reason and she DID NOT eat that last meal. She only weighs about 4 pounds and her weight has been pretty consistent for the last two years. She is up to date with her shots except for her rabies which she was to have last week but the vet thought it better to wait until she was back to herself. Her main food is MediCal Gastro which lists the contents at a min of 6% protein. Thank you for your quick reply. I am new here so looking for other threads about this issue. |

they can get seizures from hypoglycemic but why the cramping ?? i have not heard of that food ever - also make sure NO ROSEMARY as it is known to cause seizures in dogs prone to this Usually they go stiff with a seizure and lay on side for petit mal and grand mal they convulse all over. Have you consulted a neurologist on this? Is she on any medications ? I personally would never vaccinate her again if she is having these problems as you only vaccinate dogs that are healthy - the vaccines say this right on the bottle and her having this issues i would never vaccinate Was she vaccinated yearly ? Please post her vaccinations when and what as sometimes they get issues from being over vaccinated. so her fecal, urine and full blood panel is fine ? Has she ever been tested for thyroid a full panel one all 6? They can have seizures from a low thyroid as well and hypothyroid runs in this breed. Take a video on your digital camera the next time this happens and post it and also show the vet as this will help alot also go to youtube.com and type in seizure and watch those videos and post anything to us that looks like what is going on as this will help I am concerned as have not heard of cramping and seizures

| If she doesnt improve. I think Id ask for a pre and post meal bile acid test. SOmetimes enzymes look fine until after they eat and it sky rockets. You might have already had all that done, IM sorry if I mention it and it has already been performed. |

| The food is made by a Canadian company and this is the link: Home Ava was put on it when she was little as she would get stomach upset very easy so I have left her on it. Maybe it's time to change her to something else. I found the comment about thyroid interesting so will ask if that was checked. I describe what happens as a "cramp' as that seemed to decribe it best. It is like her body just tightens up....maybe tremor is a better word. I got her to the vet within the hour after that seizure but she had already eaten about 45 minutes before. She's been to the groomer today and we zipped around the block a few times while we waited for her turn! She moves like a little racehorse when there is something new to smell! Sleeping off her busy day now! Appreciate hearing the comments. I know that this glycemia thing is supposed to pass as they get out of puppyhood but she is very active, loves to walk, and maybe needs more food than a less active Yorkie. Will stay in touch! Trying to figure out how to get her picture up now! |

did they do pre and post bile acid tests as that is real important as like the other poster stated blood work does not always show high alt as my dd had perfect blood work but has mvd so that can be cause for concern as hypoglycemia and liver shunt go together does she get bladder stones or urinary tract infections ever? does she ever have symptoms after eating ?

| First of all, welcome to YT. I am curious as to why you think this is from hypoglycemia. Missing one meal really should not cause hypoglycemia in a normal, healthy adult dog. Has your vet said it was due to blood sugar?? Or is he thinking this is seizure disorder? Has he suggested a neuro consult?
