| Need medical advice..... Hello, we've had our Yorkie Cooper for a month. Tuesday I noticed limping on his right back leg. He seemed better on Wednesday but Thursday night he wouldn't put any weight on his leg at all. I took him to the vet today and nothing out of the ordinary showed up on his x-rays. The vet seems to think it may be a torn ligament or possibly a hip problem that toy breeds sometimes have. He had an injection and she prescribed him Rimadyl once a day. She said if he wasn't better in a month to bring him back. He's not very active but doesn't seem to be in pain, he doesn't cry when you touch his leg. Wednesday he spent the day playing with my daughter's little Maltese. They are the same weight, so I don't think she hurt him while playing. I guess I'm asking if any of you have had the same problem and what the outcome was? Thanks, love reading this forum. |

One of mine has come up limping several times. The first time was after he twisted it while playing with a puppy. I feared the worst, but rest and rimadyl made the problem go away for several years. The exact same thing happened to the other leg several years later, and again, rest and rimadyl made it go away. The third time, however, turned out to be a torn miniscus and cranial cruciate ligament that required surgery. Yorkies are prone to knee problems too, specifically luxating patella. Sorry I couldn't help more. I think your vet's advice is right. Rest and rimadyl and hope it goes away.

| hmmm... How experienced is your Vet? From you first post, I am not sure the Vet is experienced enough... Yorkies are prone to Luxating Patella (loose knee caps) and/or Legg-Perthes disease (hip). Most Vets can determine if one of these are present. If it is an ACL issue, I think you need to contain the dog to rest and hopefully it can heal on it's own. Otherwise surgery is needed. I do not know too much about Rimadyl, but I have a weird feeling about it. Do a search here on YT for it ans see if others have had issues with this drug |

| If your vet has mentioned a hip disorder...it is more than likely he is speaking of Leggs Perthes. How old is your puppy? By the way welcome to YT. If you have any questions on how to get around YT or with your AVATAR or signature. PM Nancy1999, she the one that is the most knowledgeable.

| Welcome to YT. I hope your baby just took a wrong step and will be fine with a few days rest and the vet's recommendations, especially since he didn't see anything on x-rays. My 7mo old was recently diagnosed with hip displaysia. It is more common in large breed dogs so I was surprised by this diagnosis, and I am still not convinced it is not Legg Perthes. We are taking the wait and see approach right now and she is not even on any medication although she does carry her leg occasionally. Time will tell for future medical needs. My vet felt her condition through a physical exam, and with x-rays, so I am really hoping your baby just took a wrong step. I hope you stick around you will get a lot of good adivce and helpful information here.

If your vet is an expert on positioning for xrays and on reading same, then presumably you can rest assured there is no hip dysplasia, or LP that might be the causative factor in the limping. Right now you are in a wait and see place. BE patient and be cautious with the exercise you allow your dog. No jumps, no fast runs, twists and turns. Let the muscle or ligament heal. You also could apply cold packs to hip/knee, then alternate with heat. This is called contrast bathing. 5 minutes on then off.

agreed. There are differing opinions on this drug... I personally wont let any of my dogs have it ever. However, even if you are to give it, 50 days is a very long time to be on it. I would find a specialist and get to the bottom of the issue now while your little one is still young rather then over medicating with no diagnosis. Welcome!

| Thanks for all the replies. Cooper is 6 months old. His regular vet wasn't in today, so we saw one we haven't seen before. I'm not sure about their experience....it's a large vet practice with 4 different dr.s. If he's not much better Monday, I'll take him back to see his regular dr. I'm not giving him anymore of this medicine....he's done nothing but sleep all afternoon. I don't like what I read about it. Thank you all for your interest and your responses. |

| Hello! Jackson had something similar happen in January. He came out limping and I had NO idea why. He's a pretty active dog, but at the time, it was winter and he hadn't been for a few days. It seemed to come out of nowhere. Vet took x-rays, nothing, checked for LP, nothing, hips, nothing. So she tested him for Lymes disease... came out positive! Lymes affects joints, etc. So she put him on a 30 day antibiotic and gave him pain meds for 7 days, problem solved. Here was my thread, http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...some-help.html

| i was going to suggest LP or hip displasia as the culprit until i read Britster's post...you might see your regular vet and just get him checked up to rule out all those things if he's not improving soon. |

| Thanks Bristster. Do you think that could be a problem even though he's on Advantage Multi? He seems much better this morning, he's not limping at all so maybe I should stick with they Rimadyl for a couple of days. I'm not sure why she gave me so much of it, there's 25 total of 25mg tablets and he's to take half of one a day. Thank you guys for all your help and I apologize for posting this originally in the wrong forum. |

| I would definitely keep him on the Rimadyl as prescribed. It is an anti-inflammatory. I would also seek another opinion if this does not improve, but if the vet did not find anything, chances are it is just inflammed. One of my pups recently had a problem with his LP. He ususally uses stairs to the bed and one night decided to "fly" off of the bed. I was horrified and rushed him to the EC because he was crying and unable to even straighten his leg. By the time I got him there, he was able to straighten it but was hesitant to walk on it. The EC vet examined him and determined it was probably just his LP and prescribed Metacam for five days. He did not feel an xray was needed. LP and a torn ligament can be palpated! The next morning I took him to my vet for another opinion and she felt the same way. Sure enough...he was walking without difficulty in five days and has not had an issue since.
