amputation

hi ,,, my poor little sonny boy went through a big operation this afternoon, he got his left hind leg completely removed. i had been worried sick no sleep last night , worrying how he was goin to be with the anesetic, i phoned at 5 today and they are keeping him in for a couple off days, i no he is in better hands at the minute, the vet said he still drowsy but tryin to move about, and all went well. thank god! was wonderin if there is any advice for after care, i have a cage etc, it was more on toilet issues x

Your vet with advise you on after surgery care, like keeping him calm, and well rested. You may need stairs to get up / down off furniture, jumping down might be an ongoing trouble.
On the up side, dogs adapt, AMAZINGLY well to such a thing! Toileting may require a little patience, and might involve more frequent bum washes for awhile. But life should get normal fairly quickly.

I am so very sorry that your little one has to go thru this. I can hear how difficult of a decision this was for you to make in your post. I have heard/read of others making a sling out of a scarf and holding the pup up to potty after a surgery.

I will keep our little one in my thoughts and prayers that he heals quickly. If you do not mind my asking, what brought you to this surgery? Hugs to you and your little one. Bo

thanks so much for ur kind words,,, my partner bought him off a breeder in papers and when we got home he had no back foot we took him back and breeder never even knew, he said the mom must have chewed it off thinking it was the cord he tried to give us another one but i knew it wud be the end for the little one, so i begged the man to let me keep him and he did and give me my money back and said he wud have been drowned, so i took him to vets and they said to wait till he was young adult before amputation, as he wud be stronger he is now 1 yrs and what a beautiful boy he is, so full offf life.xx

ps,, sonny kept hitting the bone of the ground , it wud bleed often, also a very sharp bone which ever way the mom had chewed, i always tried to bandage it but he was not having that, it was chewed right up passed where the due claw wud have been.

How on earth could the breeder not have known he didn't have a foot? Thank God you rescued this poor baby from that horrible lifeYou are my hero for refusing to part with this precious baby

Sorry to hear about your little guy but so glad you kept him. A dog ay the shelter I go to recently had his hind leg amputated. I saw him a couple of days after surgery and he was laying down, 2 weeks later he was standing on the couch in the room they were keeping him in and gets around very well. He is a bigger dog though. Keep us posted.

You will be amazed at how well he will do! I had a foster who had a hind leg amputated. I was able to bring him home on the third day after surgery. The first morning, when I got up to let everyone run outside I had expected to go and have to assist him....oh, no....he ran right out the door and did his business. There was no stopping him!
