| My yorkie is in heat... my vet says its better than to spay her bc of liver shunts?? Hey guys My 10 months old yorkie girl just got in heat. shes an indoor dog and i have no intention of breeding her... is it true i cannot spay her bc she MIGHT have liver shunts* Might as in she had high ALT levels/bile acid and I couldnt afford to get more conclusive tests to determine whether she has or not. She's completely asymptomatic healthy playful eats well. I got her from a family who didnt want her so I am unfamiliar with her history/breeder. Can I spay her? if not... how many days does she bleed? is there anything i can ask the vet to give her to stop the bleeding? |

| Nothing should be used to try and stop the bleeding. If you do want to spay her, it is best (safest) to wait til after the heat (6 weeks after is good). What were the bile acids numbers? Dogs with MVD can be spayed. Dogs with shunts are sometimes spayed during shunt repair. She may be a candidate for spay, esp. being asymptomatic, but only a vet can make that call. A specialist would probably be more agreealbe to doing it for you. If your regular vet isn't comfortable doing it, I wouldn't have him/her do it. Ellie's bile acids were 47 post, then 15.7 post. This is around the time she was spayed. Her vet was okay doing it though. Then they went up to 106. High bile acids does not mean a spay can't be done.

| I'm not sure about the dangers of spaying a dog with LS. I've never heard of that and have never had to deal with it myself. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to stop the bleeding but wait it out. The estrus cycle lasts about 3 weeks with bleeding occurring anywhere from 1-2 weeks. (It varies depending on the dog.) Just wanted to add...it's good to see you posting again. I remember that you stopped for a while and left some questions that were asked unanswered that many people were curious about regarding the ever changing story regarding your last dog. Perhaps now would be a good time to clear up the confusion...? |

| My dog was spayed and had trouble coming out of the anesthesia. Her owners left her at the Humane Society, where I got her. Luckily, we use the same vet, so I had access to her previous tests. Due to spay anesthesia problems, BAT was scheduled. Post was 126. She's on meds and L/D and working on getting further tests and possible surgery at U of Tenn. Liver issues should be discovered and assessed before spay surgery, if at all possible. Safer for the dog that way. If she has a shunt that is operable, both surgeries can be done at the same time, which would be the ideal situation. Best of luck with your pup...

| My vet was reluctant to spay Lucy due to her MVD. He said that these dogs often have problems with anesthesia and pain medication. He initially wanted me to take her to a large university. Then we re-did her BAT and it was only slightly elevated. He now says he is competely comfortable doing her spay. (Now I'm the one scared and keep delaying). I agree - only your Vet can say what should or should not be done in this case. |

| MVD dogs can be spayed, although extra precautions do need to be taken. However, this puppy needs to be diagnosed... if she does have a shunt, she will only get worse.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali was suspected to have MVD based on her Bile Acid tests and then when she came into heat we thought she had a bowel obstruction too so a board certified surgeon did her spay, during heat, and a liver and intestinal biopsies. She had a longer recovery and was only done during her heat cycle because of the possible obstruction. If at all possible they wait until 6-8 weeks after heat cycle ends.
