| Ear Cartilage damaged I feel so awful, this morning as I was walking Tiffaney I noticed her head was hanging to the side, when I looked in her ear it was so swollen and smelled really badly. We rushed her to the Vet and they told us she had a damaged her Ear Cartilage. I never noticed her scratching or any odd behaviour. The vet told us to leave her there and they would do the surgery in the afternoon and then she would come home in the evening. Well at 4 PM they called me they couldn't do the surgery because right when I left her she started vomiting (twice) so they put her on an IV to hydrate her and kept her overnite to see if they can do the surgery tomorrow. I love my vet but she wasn't there today and this vet that saw us today was just plain rude. When I called to get an update on Tiffaney she said, "We only give updates to one person and we already gave an update to your daughter this morning" I just about ate her alive in a polite manner and holding myself back for the sake of Tiffaney's well being. I am a mess and I can't wait until tomorrow. I wasn't expecting this !!!! Has anyone had this surgery? Is it dangerous? and how is the recovery? Thank you all for your help

| I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're saying. Did she scratch her ear and tear the ear?

| Sorry to hear about you your baby and your bad experience with the vet. How did it happen? I never heard of that type of surgery, is it more cosmetic?

| She was scratching the ear because she had an infection. I don't understand how when the groomer comes every two weeks and cleans out the ears (supposedly) The vet said the ears got infected because they weren't cleaned properly. She scratched and shook her head so much that she damaged her cartilage. So now they have to open up the ear drain it and put the skin back together. This is why it it so expensive too $900.00. She didn't seem like she was in pain until this morning .

| My daughter went with me and was listening to the vet. She had to explain it all to me when we left because I just lost it. I just thought it was an ear infection but when she said surgery and overnite I just tuned out. I was hoping someone on here had more information on this.

| She's only 7 years old but she has never been away from us. When the vet told me she was vomiting I told her it was because she was nervous and she said noooo in a very condesending way. I am so mad at them right now. But I have to wait until tomorrow to have the surgery. Thank you for the kind words !!

| If you'll repost this in the sick & injured section, someone should be on soon to help. I'll see what I can find out in the meantime. OK? Just copy and paste your thread there if you'd like to try it.

| OK. I found what I think is a very good article and it discusses all of the possibilities as well as describing the surgery. I hope that helps. I know you are very upset. I would be, too. Here is the link: Dog Ear Infection | Gomestic

| I am by no means an expert - but it seems to me that antibotics (both pills and cream) should do the trick? Surgery just seems a bit extreme? Let alone an overnight stay? I wish your vet was there for you today. Good luck and keep us posted.

| I think after this is all over, I would have a sincere talk with the Vet and tell him how upset he made you. What a jerk! Here you are completely over the top with fear and of the unknown and they only want to update the family once a day?! I don't get it. I feel so bad for you and your baby. I hope all goes well. Fingers crossed! |

| Hmmmm. Are you talking about the actual ear flap part? I've seen as a vet tech as well as had a dog of my own that has had the ear scratched to the point of getting blood filled between the skin in the ear cartilage. It did require surgery to release the blood in between the skin other wise it would cut off the blood flow to the rest of the ear and the tissue would die. It was surprising to me when I first saw it and was told it's more common in dogs with long ears that flap but not unheard of in dogs with upright ears. My boy Travis has a lot of hair in his ears and really doesn't like me to pull it but I do now. The hair in his ears was blocking the air from getting in and bacteria was building up. Travis is now 15 years old and recovered quickly from the surgery. Hopefully this is what you are experiencing and that vet and his communication, or lack of, was really uncalled for. |
