Can the vet determine blockage with x-ray?

My poor sweet Halo has been sick for about a week now. She's throwing up and will not eat. She was at the vet Friday and he gave her a shot for upset tummy and 2 different meds (one for vomitting/diarreah, one anti-biotic). Had her back there yesterday....she won't eat anything. He gave her fluids and found her Bun a little elevated. Changed her anti-biotic and sent us home. She's peeing very little, still won't eat and threw up again last night. I've been giving her sugar water with a syringe. Brought her back today, he kept her and is flushing her again and wants to keep an eye on her the rest of the day. I asked about the possiblity of a blockage, but he says she doesn't have one, even though he didn't x-ray. Do you all think a vet can tell by feel? Even though my Halo is a teapot, she's already lost 3 lbs. Any advise/comments anyone has would be appreciated.

Just wanted to send good wishes and prayer's for your baby to be well again.
It could be several things with those sympthoms. Did she get into any kind
of toxic product in the house or some plant in the yard? Poor baby and poor you. Hope you get answers soon.

DH & I have driven ourselves crazy trying to think of something she could have gotten into. They have a small fenced yard to play in. I can't imagine what she could have gotten and not the other 5. And toxic products are not kept so they could get into them. I even mop with a shark steamer so I don't have to use chemicals. When I do.....I use vinegar. Please keep her in your prayers.

Gosh! I hope she'll be ok. It's so hard when you don't know what's wrong. An ultrasound should show if there's a blockage, I would think. He says there isn't a blockage and I would think he would know. What about pancreatitis? I'm just guessing here.

It could depend on what is causing the blockage. I had a similar thing happen with my girl Chloe[rip] she stoped eating, kept being sick, it went on for weeks. The vets finally diagnosed a blocage and opened her up but found nothing, just that she was a little constpated. They finally put it down to a hormone imbalance as she'd recently been in season, and she'd always seamed to have trouble after her seasons.

Has Halo pooped at all or does she eat then vomit?

Does he think this is GI related...or renal? Sounds like it could be either one.

He's thinking GI related.....and as far as pooping..no she hasn't (I don't think) With 6, its hard to know sometimes. But she hasn't eaten anything, just what I've forced down her with a syringe. Vet gave her more fluids today and a vit b-12 shot. She does seem a little perker, but still refuses food. I've tried everything.....boiled chicken, egg, noodles, ceasars...I finally diluted some chicken broth and made a sort of soup with baby food chicken. At least I'm getting some nourishment into her even if its forced. She licks her lips like she wants to eat, but then turns away. I'm so worried about her.

I'm actually posting an old post of mine from a few years ago when Wrigley was a puppy. I remember how worried we were and I had never thought of all the stuff from her toys causing her problems:

The vet said her stool had all kinds of bits of different things, most likely from her different toys, small strings, fleece bits, hair, etc.. I just posted yesterday that we had learned about the danger of toys with strings and sure enough that came true today. She just couldn't pass anything because all of this had built up and there was a possibility of surgery if the treatments didn't work since this would become life threatening.
She's home, but she's had a really trying day and she's very sore, tired and just not feeling too well! It's so sad when they are so sick, you feel so helpless!
I hope everyone realizes the danger with all these toys, it sure has opened our eyes!

I just wanted to offer my prayers that she's feeling better soon. I hate it when they're sick and can't tell us what's wrong.

There is a medication (mirtazapine) that can be given that will stimulate her appetite and also will help with nausea and vomiting. BUT....the problem will still be that you don't know what it is, so I suppose it would not be appropriate.

I hope they figure out soon what is wrong with her.

Actually, pancreatitis has not been mentioned. All of the blood chems are coming out good. I just don't know. She really doesn't seem to feel really bad; she goes outside with the other babies, but, she is very weak. Hope all goes well tonight. I'm going to attempt to get her to eat again in a little while; wish me (and her) luck.

I can't answer your question, but this is something you could ask you vet. As in, how do you know that there is no blockage? Maybe it has something to do with all that flushing, and most vets are more than happy to explain things to you. If you find out let us know! Anyway, I'm just want to tell you I'm sending prayers your way, and hope that they find out what's causing Halo to be sick, hope she makes a speedy recovery!
