| Pancreatitis Hi everyone, Last Wednesday morning, Rico didn't get up to eat and seemed very lethargic. After blood tests were done at the vet, the Vet came to the conclusion that Rico has Pancreatits. He said that since Rico isn't fed human food, this was most likely cause by the stuffing from one of his toys irritating his digestive system. Rico spent two nights in the hospital with IV treatment and close monitoring. Right now, Rico is at home and on antibiotics, an antacid, and Rx dog food (I/D wet canned food). I gave him a tiny treat the other day, which made him vomit and resulted in him needing yet another anti-nausea injection at the vet. He goes for his follow-up this week. The vet said that he may have to stay on this special diet forever. I read that Yorkies are especially prone to this.... Rico is 2 years 8 months, healthy weight (he's a large Yorkie at about 11lbs, but not overweight), active... Has anyone else's baby had Pancreatitis? Any advice, etc? Thanks so much!!!

| I have had quite a few with pancreatitis over the years...my own and fosters. Usually they are hospitalized for 3 or 4 days for IV fluids and then are sent home on I/D. You will have people advise you against this food, but it has never failed for me. And, right now, I would not try to change it. Sometimes it takes a week or so for them to totally improve. Just don't give him anything else to eat! They need time for their little tummies to settle down. Yes, many bouts of pancreatitis are started by food, but many are really from unknown causes. I never heard of stuffing from a toy causing it, but I suppose anything is possible. You said that a treat made him sick....was this type of treat given to him before the initial illness? Maybe it is the problem? Here is a link with some good information: http://www.peteducation.com/article....2+1580&aid=335

| Thanks for the info. Yes, the treat that made him sick has been given to him for a while now. Of course, it's his favorite ones (Beggin Strips)... I'll keep him on the I/D for a bit... but it is expensive! Any cheaper, dry foods that are similar?

I/D is only for now....just until this tummy upset is over. There are many foods that you can buy that are not expensive. You just want to be sure what you get is a good food. One that I like is Nature's Recipe / Farmstand Selects. You can purchase it at Petsmart and Petco. I am sure others will give you some ideas of foods that are good for the pups.

I instruct my puppy owners to stay away from treats and keep a simple diet . Knock on wood i never had reports of Pancreatites becoming acute in any of our puppies, but 2 people who owns our pups had been at the emergency for it, they learned the lesson. It can become chronic if it keeps recurring. Please follow your vet advice and stay away from treats. Yorkies need a simple diet ! you have good advice already, just follow and you will be fine ! XOXO

| Oh don't fear, you are not alone....many of us have had pups w/ this condition. My last one had it and it is heartwrenching to see them suffer from an attack...It's not a death sentence and proper diet can tame the onset

| Our girl had it twice when she was younger. Put her on Iams Low Residue, a tea spoon of wet with kibble, and she has been great since then. She also gets the Iams low Residue treats, no people food, no rawhides, no nothing. It was very scary when she got it. 2 days at the Vet, IV, etc. Felt so bad for the little thing. Naturally it happened both times when my wife was away on business. I did not waste time, got her to the Vet immediately when I could tell that this was not right. |
