Unhappy I had to leave my baby at the vet! Did I do something??

My lil Jasper is almost 9 weeks old...I got him Sunday and he has already stolen my heart! He has adjusted so well, never got stressed, loves the kids, and has just been a blessing!

We woke up this morning, and I noticed he was trying to poop, and <yuck> it was stuck! After turning to the boards, and trying the "warm rag" home remedy, and much gagging, we got in the car and went straight to the doctor! He assured it that this isn't abnormal, but wanted to do an enema because he is "full" of poop. He wanted me to leave him...he said so he wouldn't be pooping all over us for the next few hours, but I can't help to be so worried for him! I don't even understand, I've been following the same regimen the breeder was as far as diet. He did have his first bath last night, and HATED the blow dryer so I ended up towel drying him and gave him a little nutri-cal (finger tip size) since he was so stressed. Can the nutri cal cause bowel problems? Should I only be using this when he's not eating? I want my little man to be with me for a long time...I certainly don't want to be the reason he's sick! If anyone has experienced this, I would so appreciate the feed back!

Bristol LOVES Nutrical. She doesn't get it anymore but when we first brought her home she liked it so my husband would give it to her. Spoiled rotten. It gave her loose stools. Not sure what could be the problem with your baby unless poo got stuck in the hair and just kept backing up? I am sure someone else will chime in. I am sure it was hard to leave your baby at the vet already too.

Hope Jasper is all better now. I've heard of this happening before, the poop gets stuck in their hair and hardens and they are just to small to push the rest of the stool out. The vet will get him back to pooping normal again I'm sure of it. Good luck once you get him back home and constantly keep his little hiney clean, that's what his mommy would have done.

I did catch mine yesterday with some stool on her booty. I cut all her hair around it, good thing I caught it in time.
I'm sorry to hear about your baby, I'm sure he will be fine and ready to poop in no time.

He has been back home now and besides being a little "tender" he is slowly starting to get some pep back. Once in a while he will walk around squatting as if he has to go, but nothing happens. I hate it for him. He's not the same guy I saw last night, but I guess I wouldn't be either if I went through an ordeal such as an enema when I was 1.7 pounds.

The vet also gave him his second set of vaccinations, which I thought he would want to wait, so he is a little groggy from that. He hasn't had a successful poop yet, but I'm sure he doesn't want to bear down too much. He's eating a little and drinking water but I have to make him. He's just so down and I can tell he does not want to feel yucky like this!

The vet told me to give him 2 ccs of honey and 1/2 cc of nutrical every day for precautionary purposes against the hypoglycemia. So I did that.

If he is still squatting but not going in the morning, we'll be back at the vet. Fingers crossed!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice! I'm so glad I found this forum it's been a God send in making it through this first week without having a panic attack!

Trimming the hair will help the poop not to get stuck and back him up.

One thing does concern me is that he is 8 weeks and already had 2 rounds of shots?

I'm sure he will be fine...I also had to cut the backside of Izzy so her pooped did not get stuck and after I'm done I use baby wipes to make sure she is clean...This helps alot. Good luck!!

I agree with the other posts. When Pixie was between 9-12 weeks she would get constipated and I would give her a lil pumpkin and it worked like a charm just make sure it has no spices in it!! plain ole canned pumpkin! Not the Pie mix!!!!

Well, we are all better! I woke up this morning to being licked in the nose and tugged at the hear! What a relief!

I didn't want to show it last night, but I was so scared! He is so tiny, and while I love the responsibility of being a Yorkie mama, I was almost doubting whether or not I could do it. He would look at me as though he didn't want me to be disappointed he was feeling bad, and my heart would just break. I was up every 30 minutes as if he was a newborn just "checking". But once he was up this morning, the first thing he did was run to his food and eat like a piggy, and drink water like there was no tomorrow. <whipes eyebrows in relief> And.....he pooped! I never thought I would be so happy for that..lol Now we can get back to training, because he is doing so great on the puppy pads.

I just gave him a bath on Thursday, but after yesterday's ordeal, I would love to give him another one, I'm sure he's feeling yuck after the enema. Do you think I should give him time before I bathe him or would it be fine? The vet did trip a "poop trail" for him, so I'll make sure it stays that way, and cleaned off.

I know, I was a bit concerned about that too. He had his first set at 6 wks. He was born on December 2, so yesterday the vet said that meant 8 ks 4 days. I was reading the vet "shot chart" and they do shots at 6, 9, 12, and 16. I thought he would wait until at least he was leading a normal daily routine to administer the second set. I know with my kids, if they were sick, or under the weather in any way, the doc always waited to give their shots. The breeder told me when I took him in for his first puppy visit the vet would probably go ahead and administer his second round, so I didn't really question it. I was a little concerned if the vaccinations would delay his healing time, but he seems to be just about 98% the Jasper I knew, though he's still pretty careful with his hiny. Should I be concerned or watch for anything??
