| bee sting / cardiac and respiratory arrest If your dog gets stung by a bee, and you see him vomiting and with diarrhea, take him to an emergency vet immediately.. I hope this post helps others. The vet told me after all had passed: "if you would have been here 10 minutes later the dog would have died". Culantro (my 9 month old yorkie) is in great condition now, but on jan 12th (last week) we saw a bee on his right back leg. I know exactly the time because I just made a call at the moment and have the call log. Exactly 10 minutes later I removed the stinger, and the dog had vomited over 5 times by then. Immediately me and my wife took him to the emergency vet, and after the 10 minutes car ride he had a violent diarrhea and pooped all over my arms and pants while I was handing him to the Vet. The vet told me that when he received the dog, he was not breathing. He had to "revive" the dog and put a tube up to his lungs. The dog had respiratory and cardiac arrest and seizures. In addition after the dog stabilized he had problems breathing.. It turns out that he swallowed liquids while vomiting, and his longs were full of it.. The dog had to stay on an oxygen chamber for 4 hours. They gave him benadryl and a bunch of other stuff (you can see all in the image of the medical records). The days after, I had to give the dog antibiotics (to avoid pneumonia from the liquid on the lungs) and a respiratory pill that made him very drowsy and made him behave slow and depress.. I'm attaching an image of the vet and his assistant notes about the incident and other pictures... Is also good to point out, the dog had absolutely no swelling where he was stung.. In fact there was no swelling at all... you can see the picture of where it was stung with just a tiny red dot. After he licked it, it turn bigger and red, but no swelling.. | That is why I always, always have liquid baby bendrayl on hand! I've had to give my yorkie some when he got stung by a bee...he wasn't throwing up or pooping but was turning circles and spazing but I gave him the bendrayl and took him to vet and by the time hubby got him to the ER vet he the bendrayl had taken affect. All turned out great but I would always have baby bendrayl on hnad for such cases. My other yorkie had a spider bite and I did the same thing and gave bendrayl and everything turned out ok yet again Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

| My first thought was, who gets stung by a bee in January? Then, I realized you are in Florida where it is warm. Those images gives me chills. I personally know all too well what a bee sting can do, but funny, I hadn't given it much the same thought for my pets. Thank you for posting this. It is a great reminder and something definitely worth making note of for future use. So glad your baby is ok thanks to your quick actions.

| Good thing you reacted so quickly and thanks for the heads up! I would ask the vet what would be good to have on hand for him should it happen again. Maybe he can write a script for Epi pens for him. Anaphylaxis in Dogs: Severe Acute Allergic Reactions For animals that are allergic to insect bites, such as bees, ask your veterinarian about getting a prescription for an 'epi-pen' and be sure to take the 'epi-pen' with you on any trips or hikes. An 'epi-pen' is a special syringe and needle filled with a single dose of epinephrine. If your pet has an anaphylactic reaction, inject the epinephrine using the 'epi-pen' and seek emergency veterinary assistance immediately

| I am so very glad that Culantro is okay... that sounded very scary! Thank you so much for sharing your story in case any of us are in a similar situation. I also thank others that have given further information (e.g. baby benadryl) that may help too!

| Fyi For everyones information. Keep a snake bite kit handy for this as well . There is a suction cup in it and if you know where the sting is use the suction cup on it ASAP. This will suck out the fluid the stinger puts into the dog. Doesn't get it all but most of it, enough to save your dogs life . This works for people too. I bought the suction cup at Wal-mart hanging rite next to the snake bite kit, same as the one in the kit. I keep one in my car and home along with some trimmers and benadryl tabs. Liquid works faster but not good for the car. In a pinch you can chew it and spit it into a syringe. |
