| Bleeding from penis Hello I have a 7 year old male yorkie who was neutered at 6 months. Last night I noticed little drop of blood tinged urine on his pee pad. He is status post 5 weeks ACL repair and our follow-up appointment was today so I just had him examined at the surgeon/emergency clinic office. They did a culture (results will be back in a day or 2), bladder x-ray and put him on Clavamox. The x-ray did not show any stones, but if he does not improve on the Clavamox, the vet would like to do an ultrasound. When I spoke to the tech, she stated that when they acquired the urine specimen, it looked normal, with no blood. I brought him home and took him to the basement x-pen that I have set up for him to potty in since his surgery and he urinated and again, the pool of urine seemed clear, but there were some slightly tinged pink drops. When I pick hip up I dabbed his peeper with a Kleenex and got another pink tinge. It seem as though the blood is coming from his peeper. He is acting normally, eating, drinking etc. Could anybody please give me any insight as to what this may be? I am concerned that the urine culture will come back normal as they did a sterile sample directly from the bladder. Thank you in advance Karen |

| If he has been x-rayed and has no stones, it sounds like a bladder infection to me. It is not unusual to have a little blood during an infection. I would just wait for the results of the culture unless it gets worse. |

| sounds like an infection to me also. if the culture comes back clear, make sure you speak with your Vet and tell him you're still finding some blood when he urinates.

| When my little Muffin had an infection, I remember there was a little tinge of pink on the pad, too. So, I think it will be something that can be easily taken care of. Good luck. I know how it is to worry.

| Thanks for all the comforting words. I am worried and thinking the worst. I just got a call from the vet and the 24 hour prelim report is in and it is negative. I did ask a million questions from crystals to prostate issues. I was not surprised that the culture was negative as from what I have been reading it sounds like a lower UTI since there is no blood when he urinates, but drops after he is done. Dog Urinary Tract Infections, Incontinence, Painful Urination, and More The specimen was extracted directly from the bladder so if it is a lower infection, it will not show up. He is only on his second full day of a 2 week course of antibiodics so it is still very early. I did notice a decrease in appetite which is a side effect of the Clovamax, but he did pass the "treat" test One more quick question. I saw some info on "Berry Balance" a natural supplement for dogs with urinary problems and was wondering if I should try that also. I hesitate as he is on the antibiodic and also Dasuquin (a glucosamine supplement) I dont want to overload him too much, even though he is a "soup pot" Yorkie--about 10 pounds Thanks again for all your input. | Thanks for all the comforting words. I am worried and assuming the worst. I heard back from the vet the the 24 prelim report which is negative which I sort of felt it might me. I have been reading on the subject and from what I gather, it sounds like a lower UTI since there is no blood in actually in the urine, just drops from his peeper after he is done and because the specimen was taken directly from the bladder is why nothing is growing. He does have a decrease in appetite which is a side effect of the Clavamox, but he did pass the "treat test" and is very vocal so I think he is fine. This is only the 2nd full day of a 2 week course of the antibiodic so I think it is too early to tell. Thanks for helping this newbie out I really appreciate it. |

Yorkie Yakker | The same thing happened with our German Sheppard. Turns out he was biting at his penis and that made him bleed. Not a whole lot we could do, after a while he became a bit obsessed and we would find drops of blood on our deck.

| Thanks everyone. Fredo had a lower UTI that has since cleared up. He is still recovering from his ACL surgery, but we have graduated to being able to go on short walks and is allowed out of the pack and play as long as he is on a leash--no free roaming. Our next appointment is on 2-17-10 and he is supposed to be released. I have been very lucky with the surgery and recovery as he does not mind being in the pack and play at all. He is content just hanging out and munching on his bully sticks. Thanks again for all you input and help. Karen and Fredo |
