| 7 week old with broken ulna Leonidas is a very fast little guy-he jumps around and on Christmas Eve (his first morning with us), he landed the wrong way and broke his proximal ulna (just below the elbow). The vet saw him that day and is speaking to the orthopedic vet-he goes in tomorrow to check the splint and hopefully to get more information on needed treatment. He is not in any pain (although he plays it up). It is very difficult to keep him off the leg. Since it doesn't hurt, he wants to run around just like before. I feel absolutely horrible for him. He's just a baby and shouldn't have to go through this. Does anyone have experience dealing with such a small puppy with a broken arm? Since he still has growth plates there isn't really any hard bone to anchor to...just lots of cartilage. I am really worried about him, his growth, and these all important early weeks where he should be learning and just having fun. |

| I wish I had some more advice but I've never dealt with this type of situation but I always worry about Jax breaking something because he is a very very jumpy boy. Luckily though for us he won't jump off of chairs, couches, beds etc. He's too scared. Good luck with your baby though! I hope he heals up fast!

| I had a Dachshund, Calvin, that was 18, He went to heaven on Nov 1st , so I know they can't jump off of things, etc. He was gone and on the floor before i knew what happened! Thanks for the post. Today he goes for follow-up at 8am, so hopefully we will know more then. |

| I don't personally have any exerience with a broken limb but a friend of mine has a poodle who broke both front legs. The were outside and he jumped up to be with her but there was no "shelf" where he jumped up to, it was just a fence and he wound up landing on his front paws and broke both. She said that they were clean breaks so it was easy to set and he would not have problems with artrithis. He was casted for 6 weeks. But is he all better now. Good luck with your baby. Hopefully he will not need surgery.

| He's only 7 weeks old? He should still be with his mommy and litter mates. Christmas is a bad time to get a new puppy - there is so much going on. I'm sorry he jumped and broke his leg. I hope he gets well soon.

That's why I purposely waited to get my baby two days after Christmas, so all the excitment of family has worn off. I hope your baby heals quickly, he's so young still | |

| I agree he should be w/Mom & Litter Mates...however, he and siblings were kept by a family with several children (ages 1-5) who would pick them up incorectly, put them above thier head, let them jump fro the couch, etc. So, of course i said ok when she offered for me to take him...and what do i do? Turn my back for one second and there it happened! And to think I wanted to get him away before the kids hurt him! Ironic. The breeder is AKC registered, but i did not agree with the way the children were allowed to handle the puppies. So there you have it! We did not get him as a Christmas Present, it was just coincidence. Thanks for the kind wishes. |

| He saw the vet today to check the splint. He emailed the radiographs to the specialist and they concur it is just the proximal ulna without joint involvement. However, my husband is taking him to the specialist today for a second opinion and so he can take his own x-ray. If it is just the ulna, they say it should heal in 3-4 weeks. However, from what i have read, statistics show that the bone will be more suseptible to fracture. |
