| New Yorkie Will Not Eat or Socialize We got a 2 yr old female Yorkie yesterday. She is up to date on all shots, spayed, and house trained. When we knocked on the lady's door she ran to the door barking. We bought her and took her home and she hasn't eaten, barked, or even moved since. It is going on 24 hrs. Some people have said she is just nervous and maybe home sick. She will not do anything but lay there. Should I be concerned or should this go away once she gets comfortable? |

This poor baby is homesick I would think. Be patient, talk softly and offer treats. She needs to feel safe with you. After two years of living with another this little one is scared to death, IMO. Yorkies get attached to their owner, it will take time, patience and much love.

| Thanks for the advice. I am concerned for her health if she doesn't start eating and getting around. |

can do some bonding that way. Perhaps offer a treat along the way. Everytime you pass her indoors say something nice and soft to her. I feel so bad she's so nervous and scared. No mommy, new house, new people. Heck I'd be scared too. All in time This breed is not dumb by any means. It's like dealing with a two year old, it will take time.

| It is very common for them to behave this way. She is just bewildered right now. Be patient and offer her food at the regular times you will be feeding her. They usually will eat within 2 - 3 days.

| I tried taking her out on her leash this morning and she wouldn't even walk. She literally just wants to sit in her bed. Every time I walk by her or my wife walks by her we speak to her and pet her. She doesn't snap or growl, she just doesn't do anything. |

| You are doing the right thing. Just let her know that you are there for her. Once in a while, sit down on the floor next to her and pet her. Then just leave her be. On her own time she will probably come out of her shell. It can take a few days...and even after that, it takes weeks before you really see their personalities. That is why in our rescue we feel that all pups should be with us for a while before we consider placing them. When we first get them we have no idea what they will be like.

| That is very good news. This is our first family dog and I've been doing lots of research before we got her to find out about their personalities. This is going against everything I read. She is a beautiful dog and we fell in love with her the minute we set eyes on her. I just didn't want her to be miserable. |

Agreed....and also you want to have her signed up with a vet so that if she shows any signs of illness, the vet already knows her. In the next couple of days, keep an eye on her mental status...I am quite sure she will eat something soon, but she could end up with hypoglycemia if she does not eat. No reason to panic, though....just watch her.

| I brought our first Yorkie home on 11/2/09... less than 2 months ago. He was 4 months old and he was from a rescue. Like you, he caught our attention because he was the first one to the door when we got there. Very engaging, social. He also seemed miserable and refused to eat when he got here. He played a little...halfheardtedly...but mostly he laid around moping. The rescue gave me some food to get me started....what they said was "one serving" was barely dented in 2 days. He refused the treats I had bought. I took him out and actually walked the neighborhood into a few dog boutiques. He was little and it was cold..I actually kept him stuffed down my jacket rather than on a leash. We scored a lot of free samples and the puppy made a liar out of me by eating treats when coaxed by a professional dog groomer, and also a guy at a dog boutique. I also learned, he likes crispy types of treats, not chewy ones. He went nuts over the Dr Becker's Bites. He was living on those for a day or so. I also gav him some Karo syrup. Did your rescue ask you to bring the dog to a vet? Mine did...the adoption contract required me to sign off that I would bring the dog to a vet within 7 days. I did, and it turned out the puppy had giardia. So we began treatment straight away, and it's possible the giardia had something to do with his not eating..not feeling right in the tummy. From what I understand, giardia is not uncommon and needs to be tested over a preiod of time, so my puppy may have been clean on his last vet visit but he was (+) again by the time I got him. They are sensitive for sure! I bet yours will adjust soon. Good luck, keep reading and posting. |

| Thanks for the info. She is doing a little better today. She ate some yesterday and she will walk around the house until she sees one of us then she lays down. We were stopping to pet her and talk to her every time we walked by her. We started doing it every other time so she could just watch us and not be bothered by us. She studies us and is actually showing a little bit of life now. I believe she will come around in a few days. Thanks for all the help. |

That's wonderful news. Poor little girl, you can just imagine how frightened she must be. Once she knows you and trusts you you are in for some real fun and loving with a Yorkie. Have patience because it's so worth it. They are more human than you realize. She's sizing you up as much as you are her. Once she's knows she there to stay your in for prue pleasure.

| Just wanted to let everybody know that Ella is doing awesome! She started coming around little by little and now she runs up to us, jumps around on us, and is eating like a normal Yorkie. She is very protective of us already and actually barked and growled at my son's friend as they were play wrestling because she thought he was hurting him. I appreciate all the advice and tips. We were extremely concerned that she would not come around because of how drastically her mood had changed. She is part of our family now and more importantly, she is acting like it.
