| Kidney Failure Hi all I am new to this site and just really need some support. I rescued an older yorkie about 2 years ago that was abused. She has been the highlight of my life for the last 2 years. She has been there with me through a separation and has traveled everywhere with me. Now she has kidney failure. She started vomiting on Saturday and on Sunday was just laying around. I took her to my vet first thing Monday morning and was given the diagnosis. I had to take her from my regular vet to the emergency vet last night for her to be monitored. I've read many of the post on here about kidney failure but have not seen any that had seizures associated with them. My vet is telling me that she is having the seizures because her calcium levels are low. Has anyone heard of this before? I'm now waiting on the word to see if she will be coming home tonight or back to the 24 hr. vet. I really can't take losing her but don't want to see her suffer. She really is my best friend. My vet hasn't really given me an answer to how long she can live with this disease just that it depends on how bad her kidneys are. So do any of you know that because she is having the seizures we are at a really bad point or is this just one of the symptoms? I can't imagine having to put her down it would absolutely kill me but how do I know if she is suffering. I got her to eat some turkey this morning but not much. Any advice would help. |

| Renal failure can be managed sometimes for years. It all depends on the stage of it. I lost my Cody at the end of August. He had renal issues from the time I had adopted him four years earlier. He was on kidney diet for years and most of the time it kept him pretty stable. There were some moments where he needed to be hospitalized over the past two years and then this year it escalated. Eventually it does get them, but often they can be managed, as I said, for long periods. Consult closely with your vet about what to feed. Turkey alone would not sound like the right choice due to the high protein. Many vets push Hills KD but I have always preferred Purina NF In his last six months I cooked for him...it was a special diet that a veterinarian who is a nutritionist had made up for him. Yes, low calcium can cause seizures. In renal failure you see high levels of phosphorous...calcium will counter that. Many vets recommend Tums to replace the calcium. Good luck to you. I know how upsetting it is to see them in the hospital, but when their levels are way out they do need IV fluids. As to their appetites, there are many meds that can be given to stimulate the appetite. They also need meds to counteract the nausea that comes with renal failure. I suggest you do a lot of reading. There is a lot on the web about renal failure in dogs. There are also lots of people on YT with knowledge about it.

| I am SO sorry to hear this. Your little one has been fitted with angel wings and you will meet again one day. While I do not know your own personal pain, I have had my heart broken as well. I was sick when I lost my baby in August. The one thing that helped me a bit was to look back at the four years I had with him. I poured through all of his pictures. I was able to think about the awful start in life that he had and how he really did have a good life with me. I hope you can get to that point...to know that you gave your pup a good life for the past two years. Often when they are rescues their past has done a lot of damage to them. When they leave us, we hurt, but they are in a better place. She was lucky to have had your love....so many do not have that opportunity. I will say a prayer for you tonight.

| I'm sorry for your loss. There isn't anything that will comfort you now. But time will ease the pain. I know the nightmare of kidney failure. IT IS BRUTAL. Blessings |

We are all different with how we deal with a loss like this, I always had to have a new baby to keep me going, to give me a reason to get out of bed.. and I always look at it like an honor to my lost baby to need another .. never to replace what I lost, but to keep me from losing myself.. sending big hugs to you and will think of you, please remember the love she gave you and the good times you shared.. | |

| Thank you all for your blessings and prayers. I do have another baby that I rescued back in December. His name is Chewie and we are leaning on each other during this painful time. I know he knows what happened. They were best buds and he is usually a happy go lucky dog. For the past day he just wants to lay in my lap. I have had pets come and go through the years but for some reason this little girl that passed really touched my heart. Maybe it is because of the abuse she encountered before I adopted her but we always so close. It took some time for her to warm up to me but once she did we were unseparable. I knew she was old and had problems when I rescued her and I knew she would probably break my heart but I couldn't pass her up. She was such a lost soul when I adopted her and she turned into a bundle of joy. I held her one last time last night hugged and kissed her but I saw pain in her eyes almost like she was already gone but how do you live with the fact that you made a decision to end your precious friends' life. If it wasn't for my vet whom I love and respect I don't know how I would of made it through it. I wish I could figure out how to transfer my pics from facebook to here but havent' been able to figure it out. If any of you would like to see her my name is Laurie Milani and my pics are not set to private so you will be able to see her. I have a pic of her on there the day I adopted her and plenty more since. Thank you all for your support it really helps. |

| I also lost my 16 year old to kidney failure....it was the most painful thing Ive had to go through. We struglgled for a week and she one day looked at me and I knew she was in too much pain and was getting worse everyday, we had to make the painful decision to let her go and be in peace. It was hard but I know she is in a better place and not in pain anymore. Its been a year, I still think about her everyday. Just remember how great of a life she had with you, the good times you shared...she was a very lucky girl to have you save her and give her the life she deserved. It takes a very special person to take in an abused older dog. My thoughts are with you

And, yes they do grieve...my George had an awful time after Cody passed. They always slept side by side on my bed...now George does not even want to sleep in bed. For days after Cody passed, George stuck to me like glue. He has never been like that. He is better with that....but it kills me at night when he stands outside my closet crying to go in there to sleep alone. I could not view pics on facebook.

| I just looked at the pictures on Facebook....she was a living doll! What was her name? I did not see it. Oh...and Chewie is a cutie pie! How sweet of you to take in little rescues and love them like you do. I can tell she was totally adored...she was one of the lucky ones. I wish you peace.....
