| I think my dog has ringworm or a black bruise? Hi Everyone! I'll be bringing my yorkie to the vet to get him checked up, but I want to ask for some advice before I do since I won't be able to take him until the end of this week. How come so late? My boss won't let me off since she needs me to work all this week. I probably have to take him Saturday. Anyways, I gave my Yorkie a bath today and noticed a black round hairless spot near his shoulder. My friend thinks it's a ringworm, but I think it's a bruise. I took him to the vet on Sept 25th to do a fungassay dtm test and it tested negative. So he shouldn't have it since the test is negative right? I heard having ringworms is very contagious, but I checked myself and my Maltese and we don't have anything. This leads me to conclude that it is not ringworm. I felt the skin where the circular shape is located. The skin feels thick and it's raised up. Does ringworm makes the skin thicker? Well, I think it's a black bruise. it looks black and there's no hair. The dead skin and hair is rubbing away. Will the hair grow back? I got animax cream and amoxi drops to give to my Yorkie. If it really is a bruise, I think I caused it by accidentally pulling him too hard when we were walking on the sidewalk. I think his shoulder scrapped on the sidewalk. I didn't really look at his skin. I looked at his legs and shoulders instead. He seemed fine since he got up and started to walk/run around again. What does everybody here think? Bruise or ringworm? Well, no matter what it is, I will be taking him to the vet. Thank-you! Last edited by junsu; 11-03-2009 at 11:47 PM. |

| Can you take a picture of it? How old is he? Is he light or dark? Could it be a freckle or a mole? My boy is really light and I noticed some freckling on him... never seen it before but I've never had a light skinned dog I just bought some conditioner that has a sunscreen in it - and you leave it on after shampooing. I'm hoping this gives him some protection.

| Could it be an allergic reaction to a bug bite? The test for ringworm takes something like 10 or 15 days so I would think if it is negative, it is pretty accurate-although I'm no vet. Good luck and I hope you figure out what it is.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It sounds like he may have been given a shot in that site and developed vasculitis there...rabies is often the most damaging to the skin integrity when vasculitis happnens. They are supposed to note the location whenever a shot is given, so it'd be important to know which shot caused this reaction, for the future -- bc it could happen again, and even worse next time.

| Ringworm is a fungus and appears normally as whitish circular spot with a red ring around it. It will fluoresce under a black light (urine detection light) in a darkened room.

| I just had the same thing with my 6 month old yorkie. The vet thought maybe it was ringworm but it didn't glow under blacklight and it was raised and plaqued over with black scale. We did the skin culture, 12 days later it was positive for fungus but they didn't know what type. If I wanted it typed they would need to send it out for an additional fee. I opted just to get the spray antifungal and go from there. On the original visit they had also given me animax, this helped to remove the plaque but for lack of a better word the "lesion" was still there. The spray is working much better. |

| Update to the Vet Visit Hi Everybody! Thank-you so much for your replies and opinions! I finally was able to get off early today to take my yorkie, Junsu to the vet. The vet said she has no idea what it is and recommended me to go to an animal dermatologist. I will make an appointment for Junsu this Saturday. I will update everyone about my findings. My vet told me that it is not a ringworm. She said that he will always have that black scale on his skin, but it's not detrimental to his health. I want to get rid of it so I am willing to do anything for Junsu. I hope it's not a permanent scar. It was my fault that he is in that state. The vet also said that his hair will never grow back. I wanted to cry when I heard that. If I had paid more attention to him then this wouldn't had happened. I'm so sad. I'm such a bad fur mommy. How can I not notice such a big spot on his shoulder? Now, I have to double check my furbabies to make sure they are okay. Whatever money it takes to get his skin heal up is fine with me. It was my fault for not noticing it. Maybe if I caught it sooner, it wouldn't be like this. I just hate myself now. I'm so mad at myself. I didn't see it until I gave him a bath and saw the hairloss and black spot on his skin. The vet said it took awhile for the black spot to form so she was surprised that I didn't see it. I really didn't see it. I'm so blind. I have a feeling that it is some type of fungus like what Shiloh B's yorkie has. The description is very similar. My Maltese doesn't have it so I don't know where Junsu would get the fungus from. Shiloh B, is your yorkie's skin healing up with the fungus spray? Is hair growing back? Where did you get your anti-fungus spray from? My vet also called it a lesion too. I don't think the lesion has to do with rabies shots. Could it? He had the rabies shot on June 28th, 2009 and now it's November. it might be a bug bite too. There's this bug that keeps coming up from somewhere and I notice Junsu trying to eat it one day. I raised my voice to let him know that it's a "no-no". That bug might be poisonous. It looks like a grasshopper. After my apartment lease contract is up, I am moving out of here. I will include pictures of the lesion. It's not very clear. Thank-you again for everyone's thoughts and concerns! You guys are awesome! I hope I can help someone out in the forum someday like how you guys help me. ^_^ |

| OMG; i am so sorry; that looks really scary. once my dog had a skin infection the doctor gave me resortin ointment which is antifungal and antibacterial ointment; it worked really good. did the vet give you anything to apply; also you can give probiotic powder 3 times daily to help fight the fungus. best of luck

| By the looks of that I would certainly make an appointment with a specialist. And please don't beat yourself up about this. We all make mistakes and learn from them. YT has helped me be a better furbaby mommy. Keep us updated. ~Joanne~

| Wild guess here from your photos it looks like some kind of old abcess. When that happens, the infection damages the surrounding skin which causes the hair to fall out, and damaged skin will slough off. If that is directly behind his shoulder, it could be from a vaccine, a microchip, or a bug or animal bite, or a thorn from a shrub could do it. Good thing is, when it's all healed up, I think the hair could grow back, it may just take a while. The old, damaged skin will slowly shed/slough off and new, healthy skin, will replace it. Depending on the amount of damage done will determine the amount of time it takes for the skin to recover. Like I said though, this is a wild guess. Don't feel bad about not catching this sooner. Many of us have missed things going on with our pups. The important thing is that you did catch it, and you're doing the right thing by having it seen by a vet and a specialist. Lesson learned, you'll be a better mommy from now on because of this, and so will others on this site who read your story. Waiting for an update!
