| advice on Pedialyte Help!! Hi thanks in advance for the advice. Izzy went to the vet's today, poor lil guy..he's starving. But b/c he has had diarrhea and vomiting since Monday night, the vet's advice was to starve him for 36hrs. It's killing me cause he's only 4lbs. But the vet advised giving him Pedialyte as much as possible? I was so distraught, b/c I just spent the past two weeks with a loved one dying of cancer, now I can't remember how much Pedialyte? Anyone have any advice? he's a 4lb Yorkie that's 2yrs old. I am so overwhelmed b/c when I took him in today they told me his fever was so high and his little heart was slow. It's so odd though, cause hes been drinking water, looking for his dinner and a treat? He was playful until after the dr's b/c they had to do his anal sacs to get a fecal sample. Not fun...I've babbled but any advice would be great...and one more thing, any advice how to get him to drink it or take it? I've tried a syringe and he won't take it. I can't hold him down to give it to him either, I just can't do the two things at once? He's too squirmy. I just want to cry b/c I am so scared of losing another family member. |

| When I have something I need to give one of the dogs and they are not cooperating, I sit on a low chair and put the dog between my knees, facing away from me. Place the dog low enough between your legs that it cannot lean or swivel around (about shoulder high on the dog). Hold your legs tight together, and this gives you both hands to use on the dog. Gently pull the head slightly back towards you and slip the syringe in the side of the mouth and give the dog the medicine or fluids. If the dog wriggles out or you can't keep your knees together that long, just stop and start from the beginning again. Try to be as calm as possible and the dog will learn that struggle is useless when mommy puts her in this position. Oh, and this position is great for trimming ears too. Good luck.

| Hmmm, what is the diagnosis? How many times has he thrown up? What bloodwork has been done? It sounds like he may need an IV. At the very least, maybe PediaSure would be better. It contains protein... I think I'd be insisting on a better answer than what the vet has given you.

| if hes drinking water just empty the water out of his dish and put the Pedialyte in there he should just drink it, if not just give it to him by syringe. wow 38 hrs with out food, that might make him very weak. Id call another vet . |

| I thought the same thing when I read this. Starving a tiny yorkie just doesn't make me comfortable -- I'd get a second opinion. At least give him chicken baby food and rice to keep up his strength and push the fluids for sure. There are lots of meds that will stop the vomiting and diarrhea, I wonder why they weren't given to him, especially because of his size. Have you used Nutri-Cal?

| thanks so much thank you all so much for all the help. It has given me a peace of mind, when I needed it the most. Izzy is doing much better, he is taking the Pedialyte. Drinking plenty of water and has even tried to play with his roomie, Mokka, a 6lb Pomchi. I had to end the playing just until he is strong enough with food in his tummy. I am going to be giving him baby food version of Chicken and Rice. I probably shouldve mentioned that Izzy was given a couple injections yesterday. One was to stop the vomiting, the other was to help heal the inflammation in his throat from vomiting. Poor lil boy, that made me feel guilty. Then they sent me home with meds for the diarrhea. Which worked. I know they ran some blood work too, to check his white T cells? But it showed those were pretty normal. Thank goodness b/c once I heard T cells, all I could think of was cancer. After watching a loved one die last week from cancer, I started bawling in the patient room. Poor Izzy, just tilted his little sweet face and tried to make me feel better. God bless him..I only hope he knows how much he has changed my world. anyways, once again babbling...lol. Just wanted to give you an update and say thank you everyone. |
