| Plea for LP surgery discussion! Hi everyone, I have been reading every thread on this entire forum about LP surgery, as my year and half old Moose was diagnosed a little over a month ago. After much discussion with our veterinarian we have decided to make an appointment for an initial consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. Moose's right leg is by far the worst. It "splays" out when he lays down; he sometimes has to work really hard to keep it from sliding out when he sits or lays. He also scoots it across the floor and has learned not to bend his right knee at all because I imagine it is very painful. In the beginning we thought he might begin to recover after 2 weeks of intense rest, but the LP has gradually gotten worse. What prompted us to make the appointment with the surgeon for next Monday was the fact that he has done nothing but lie down and sleep for the past 3-4 days because he is in such pain with his right leg. That being said, our veterinarian said that his left back leg is grade 1-2 and could develop to 3 or 4 like his right leg in time. So she is reccomending surgery for both back legs in order to prevent having to do two separate surgeries. He is young and very small (4lbs) and I am very scared to proceed with surgery, but I see absolutely no quality of life for Moose as he is right now. He no longer runs, rarely plays, and can no longer manage a long walk outside. There are so many different opinions and experiences about LP surgery on this forum so I just wanted to explain our situation and see if anyone has experienced this first hand and would like to offer info/advice. Thanks for listening! P.S. Cant remember the exact grade of LP but will post soon! (3 in the right back leg, 1-2 in the left I think) Moose's Mom Last edited by LBH; 10-09-2009 at 02:49 PM. |

| I'm so sorry about Moose. I don't have any experience with LP but just wanted to let you know that he and you will be in my prayers. Good luck with all the decisions that you have to make!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | sorry Moose has LP in both legs. My Morgan does too, although she is not in pain like Moose or show the signs of problems like he does. I used to work for two orthopedic surgeons so i saw LP surgery everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. Personally, if both legs are a problem, i would have them done at the same time. Its honestly not that bad on them. Sometimes they cannot walk the day after surgery or they need help but usually by day two they have figured it out. If they have problems walking on their own the surgeon will usually keep them an extra day so they get more injectable pain meds and help from the surgical techs which is great. The recovery time for LP surgery is at least 6 weeks, when doing one or both legs. So you can either get one leg done, pay at least $3000, have 6 weeks of recovery and then pay another $3000 to do the second knee and have another 6 weeks of recovery. Or you can have both legs done, pay $3500-4000, have 6-8 weeks of recovery and then be done with it. i prefer the later. those prices are just an estimate of the cost in my area, where you go it might be the same or less.

| I am sorry to hear that your little one needs LP surgery. I will be happy to share whatever I can with you as my CoCo had surgery to both her knees last November. It has been a success and she now runs and plays again. I would suggest having them both done together, as the recovery is not easy on them and would hate to have gone through it a second time. I will pop in again in a day or two and see what else you need to know.

| Here is a link to my thread about lp surgery on my little one. After all said and one, I have to say that I am glad we did it. He's so much better now. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...picture-b.html I am sorry your little one is in such pain and may have to have both knees done. We were fortunate and only had an issue with one knee. Feel free to pm with any questions. All the best.
