Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Until this year, I remained blissfully ignorant of this potentially fatal condition, when out of the blue - Abigail was stricken with bloody stool and frothy vomit. She was diagnosed HGE, and our vet recommended immediate hospitalization for IV therapy. An untreated episode of HGE can go downhill VERY quickly, possibly resulting in death in 8 short hours. I was terrified. Terrified to leave her in an emergency hospital an hour away, and terrified not to treat her. We did leave her for treatment, and she recovered. Here is a link that might help.

| I'd say it is not HGE. Her bloodwork was fine, right? If it was HGE, her PVC (or hematocrit) should have been up. How long has she had runny stool (days, weeks, months)? Has it been bloody this whole time, or did that just start? Is the blood red or black? We went through 8-9 months of this with Ellie (not rally runny, just very soft) until finally a diet change worked.

| I am quite sure it is not HGE. If she had that, trust me, you would have been running to the vet. It is sudden and awful bleeding! Are you sure it is blood? Take a sample to your vet to have it checked!

| my dog had 2 episodes due to HGE; they had to put her on IV for 2 days in the ER and some IV meds; then they sent her home with antibiotics and zantac to settle her stomach. also i had to feed her a bland diet for a while; boiled chicken and rice or baby gerber food. i know this might sound weird but its working; now she eats 4 small meals a day; 2 meals of baby food gerber with oatmeal and 2 meals of the honest kitchen force formula; she loves it and she's been doing good so far. of course i add digestive enzymes, probiotic, vitamins and homeopet upset stomach drop; and she hasn't vomited after that. what food is ur dog eating now? good luck

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry Lola is having problems. My Cali has a lot of tummy problems. She has always had colitis episodes but earlier this year her symptoms were more severe, she wouldn't eat she walked hunched over, bloody vomit and stool. She had HGE and then a relapse. If I remember correctly the vet said if the PVC is over 60 than it is HGE. So hopefully Lola will get better soon on the medicines.
