Yorkie Talker | Liver enzymes high I could use some info please. My harley is 1 yr old and 2lb 3 oz. He had his baby teeth removed a month ago. I was told his liver enzymes were high. Yesterday i took him back for follow up. The test was still high at 327. Monday he will get a bile test. He is a picky eater. Won't eat dry or can dog food. He eats meat and some veggies. He is very spoiled. Can his diet be some of his problem? Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Harley's mom |

| Probably not. Food may make him feel sick, so he only wants certain things. Meat and vegetables shouldn't really make liver enzymes go up though.

They are only 60-80% accurate when trying to diagnose a shunt. They are, however, good for seeing the size of the liver and checking for bladder stones. The Protein C test would be a good option.

| what kind of meat and veggies are you feeding him; watch out if they are high in sodium. you can aid his liver by adding digestive enzymes, probiotic and milk thistle drops. the milk thistle will regenerate the damaged liver tissue. i hope he gets better soon. good luck

Yorkie Talker | Thanks for your replies. harley's ultrasound showed a 1.5 mm shunt. We were told 50% chance he would have problems. we are considering surgery. I want to give him the best and longest life that I can. He eats chicken, steak, very lean ground beef. He loves green veggies (raw and cooked) He won't eat anything unless he sees it come off my plate. I know he needs his dogfood. I have tried putting some into meatballs. Worked for 1 meal only. I have pretended to eat some dry dogfood. He had to see what I had and did eat 3-4 pieces. He is spoiled rotten!!!! I do realize that has to change in order to keep him healthy. Thanks again. This is my first yorkie. He is so tiny!!! I am learning, thanks to the folks here on yorkie talk. harley's mama |

| Not sure how far away you are from the U of Tenn - but Dr. Tobias is the BEST liver shunt surgeon, so if you are able to, that's where I'd go! NO MORE MEAT - these are posion to his body and you are doing more damage feeding this to him. The Vet should have given you RC kibble or Hills L/D wet. Some people bake little balls of the L/D and that may be enough to entice him to eat it. You can also lightly coat some of the RC kibble with a little goat cheese (not too much though) and that may work. Apple bits (no skin), watermelon, romaine lettuce, sweet potatos in moderation though (mine like them sliced and baked like fries, but no oil) are all ok to feed as snacks. |

Yorkie Talker | THANKS! NO more meat starting tonight. Our job required us to be away from home for several months now and I have used an unfamilar vet. I will be taking him to his vet soon. Per phone his vet said the nearest surgeon is in Oklahoma City. I will go and get the new dogfood in the am. I will also do my research so that I can learn how to help him and not make him worse. |

also try milk thistle drops from wholefood store; they help regenerate the liver; so his liver might heal without surgery. also add digestive enzymes and probiotic; that should improve his liver and digestive system a lot; best of luck
