| OMG you guys saved my dog's life! So I have been cruising on here and read all the reactions to shots threads. It scared me, I have had lots of dogs and never seen a reaction to the shots. So I made Luna's appt for the morning, just in case, so I would not have to hunt down an emergency vet. Took her in, asked the vet about reactions, and he gave the shots. I headed home (literally two blocks from the vet) and when I pulled up she was drenched with drool. This was not on the to watch for list the vet gave me, so I called him. He said bring her back. I drove right back and when I walked in they grabbed her from me and ran her back to administer benadryl and dex. Their reaction scared me more than the drool for sure. After a bit they brought her out to me. She needs one more booster to finish her puppy shots, any suggestions? She did NOT get a lepto shot, the reaction was from bordetella or distemper (the vet is guessing distemper). The vet said next time for sure I will have to hang out for awhile there, with possible benadryl before the shot. He is concerned because even though her reaction was 'mild' it was very fast. Anyway, THANK YOU. If I had done things differently Luna would have been in trouble!! And you should consider getting shots in the morning, just in case!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my gosh, I'm SO glad she is okay - and that you were still that close to the Vet! Phew! And, I'm so glad that YT was helpful in providing awareness ahead of time. I swear, I've learned more here about yorkies/dogs than anywhere else.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Well, I'm glad you called, who knows what would have happened if you ignored it. Many times the first reaction to an allergy is the mildest, so on the next shot, I would definitely plan on staying there a while. Does your dog go for many car rides? You might want to take him on a few rides, in between where nothing bad happens, so he won't associate his reaction with the car, and drool every time he's in the car. Your idea about getting shots in the morning is a great tip! Joey always get sick at night or weekends.

| That is an excellent idea about the car rides! I will for sure take her for several soon. How long do you think I should wait? She is knocked out from the meds right now, but I could certainly take her anyway. Don't know if she would notice though lol.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Lol, I'd let her sleep it off! I've had so many dogs that were terrified of the car when we got them, and I was determined not to make Joey scared. If all they do is go to the vet every time they are in the car, they will get scared, just because the shots hurt, and since the shots produced symptoms, it will be worse for her. I would wait a few days, some dogs don't feel too well the next day after shots, and you want to choose a place where there are no other dogs, since she hasn't had all her shots, but giving her a treat when she gets to the place might help, or you can just drive around the block, if there's no where to go. After Joey had all his shots, I took him to Petsmart; he loves that place, and will often jump in his little car seat when he wants to go for a ride. I swear he starting to know the way to certain places, and last time seemed anxious when we turned on the road that takes him to his vet.

| Great to hear Luna is doing good. Your immediate reaction by taking her back to vet was a smart decision.

| Yes these were puppy shots, only the second set. The vet seemed to think she reacted to the distemper shot. They did the bordetella in the nose and he said if it was that she reacted to that she probably would have had some lung/breathing issues, rather than the drooling first. I am going to ask if he can do them separately next time, and do titers for the yearly. I am also thinking I want to put off her rabies until she is 6 months old (what a lawbreaker I am becoming!). I wanted to enroll her in agility classes, and all the vaccinations are required so I am really sad about that. I know these places do not accept titers Are there other things that go along with reactions to the shots? Such as other allergies? Reactions to antibiotics? Is there anything else I need to watch for? Thanks guys! Going to go looking up Jean now!

| Benedryl!!! I always do the benedryl at home before we go to the vet for shots, always split their shots, I don't ask the vet I tell her I want to split the shots. I take my furbabies to the drive thur, like the bank the fast food drive thur and to put gas in the car, from the beginning since they were young and they love it, So when I say bye bye now they r so excited and don't know whats up. Hope it turn out ok for both of u !!!!! bark@ulater!!!! manina, miley, max Last edited by manina; 08-15-2009 at 09:50 AM. |

| My two Yorkies always get bendryl orally with their shots. It knocks them out, later. The vet suggested it, and we always do it, just in case of a reaction. I was very impressed because this is the Luv My Pet "vet on wheels" at Petco. It's a low cost vaccination clininc. The vet is awesome! I can't speak for all their vets. I live in the nw burbs of chicago, so I can only speak for this one vet. Teresa PS, Oh and I usually linger/shop in the store for about a half hr after the shots, just in case of any side effects, though we've never had any. We also never get the Lepto one, due to all the advice against it on this forum. Last edited by LucyNTuckersMom; 08-17-2009 at 06:52 PM. |
