| Help!!!!!!! Need help!!!!! Emergency! I just adopted a Yorkie-s**tzu mix from a lady in my town. The pic she showed me of him is so different from the poor little baby! He is going bald on the top of his head...he has scratch marks and such. I did see fleas on him and immediately gave him a bath and put proper flea medicine on him removing the flea collar! He is so thin, I can feel his ribs and his spine!!!!!!!!! He will only eat out of my hand! They gave me medicine for "hot spots"...does this sound like hot spots to anyone?! Would that cause weight loss and hair loss?! I will be able to take him to the vet Friday, but just wondered if anyone here would know what it would be! Is there a certain food I can buy to help him gain weight? Thanks so much!!!

| He could be allergic to all the flea bites which will take a huge toll on his immune system. Also, dogs get tapeworms from fleas so I'll bet he has those, too. Tapeworms will make them really thin. I'm sure your vet can get him feeling better. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | lots of fleas, scratching, bald spots, weight loss? what color are his gums? if they are pale he is probably anemic from the fleas. good thing you bathed him and took care of that. as long as he's on a premium puppy food and is healthy he should start gaining weight soon. If he is pale and anemic i'd take him to the vet as soon as possible. that's no good for a tiny puppy.

| Take stool sample to vet and request a complete lab exam on it for Giardia parasite and/or Coccidia, besides all of the worms. Capstar is a great flea medicine for little ones (2 lbs - 25 lbs) and 1 tiny pill make the fleas drop within 30 minutes. Fleas make your puppy very anemic. Make sure to bath the baby with an oatmeal shampoo to heal his skin heal. Make sure puppy is eating as many little meals a day as possible. Mix soft food and/or grind dry food and mix with soft food and a tiny bit of water. Makes food more palateable. Make sure not to feed baby anything with "meat by-products"!! And see if you can get something like Hy-Vite for a few days (vitamines and iron). Good Luck!! |

| I would ask the vet and do only what he/she tells you to do. I have adopted 2 animals in similar shape and my vet said to feed them as I normally would, and let them put the weight on gradually. Overfeeding and supplementing can cause problems in emaciated and normal animals. Growth spurts can cause bones to becomes weak. It only took about a month for my cat to start showing signs of weight gain, eating a normal diet (and some treats!) Also feeding a normal diet allows the body to gradually adjust to handling the nutrients. You've got an animal that's not been getting enough, to overload would surely put a strain on his liver and kidneys. Moderation is the key here, I believe. My cat was so bad, I was sure he would be admitted to the hospital and be put on fluid therapy, and whatever else. I was sure he would die at home. But, he didn't! I got him in January, he was 6 pounds and you could feel every bone in his body. Today, I don't know what he weighs, but in June, his weight had doubled, and you could just feel his ribs and a little fat under his skin. Good luck and don't worry!

what food are you feeding as my concern is food allergies and also have scraped for mites as demodex affects the facial area on dogs and dogs with poor immune system are susceptible to demodex mange as well as allergies as well as thyroid issues all are auto immune disorders bless you for taking this little one | |

| fecal was a great idea too -- i would have this dog thoroughly examined so you know what you are getting into as looks like previous owner did not take real good care of this little one |
