Default Very worried about Tenci

Last week I noticed that when Tenci ran or got excited she began panting and had a kinda hoarse sound. She was fine except for when she ran or got excited. I took her to the vet Friday. The vet said that she had a gum infection and needed a teeth cleaning asap. They gave her Clindrops 25mg twice a day for 8 days, and she is going in Tuesday morning for a teeth cleaning. I can tell by looking at her teeth that they do need to be cleaned, but could this be causing her to pant like that? and she will have to be sediated during the cleaning. That scares me to death! I am so worried about her. Does anyone have any experience with this? or any advice for me? Thanks for all the input I can get!

I would assume that the panting is not related to the gum disease. My dogs have been sedated for teeth cleaning, and they do just great.

my dd is going in tuesday for teeth cleaning with board certified dentist and my demi had horrible teeth and had to have 27 teeth removed for periondontal disease and she did not pant like that nor is my dd and she is 5 - do not do dental unless you have done full blood panel and urine checked to make sure nothing else is wrong. Also i would go to bc dentist if there is one in the area. Ours does not do pre - antibiotics as he does not feel it is necessary and says antibiotics are way over used as they do a shot of antibiotics during procedure and give it after dental as well and he says that is enough. Here is our dentist Dogandcatdentist.com - Veterinary Dentistry in Los Angeles

make sure they do propofol, isoflurine, iv fluids and catheterization -- all of this and pre blood work and urine and do free catch urine at home not the needle in bladder

Thanks for the replies. Now I am really worried. My vet told me that the panting was because of the infection in her mouth. Since I have been giving her the meds it has seemed to help a little. I always request pre op blood work before any of them are put under, but if she does not really need the cleaning I'd rather her not have it. I'd rather try the pets life gel. There isn't a pet dentist anywhere around me. I wish they were. More advice-What should I do now??

It sounds totally to me like reverse sneezing. The running and being excited then doing it is what makes it sound like reverse sneezing. Totally harmless. Never heard of a dog panting because of teeth infections. Jemma has reverse sneezing when she gets really excited and running. Not always, but she still does do it.
Bring it up to the vet, the reverse sneezing. Believe me, it does no harm.

It doesn't really sound like the reverse sneezing. To me it sounds like she is hoarse and having trouble breathing. Her mouth is open and she is panting during this. She doesn't have these symptoms unless she is excited, barking, or running. I told the vet, but he told me that it was from a gum infection. I really don't see the connection either. I am thinking it may be a colaspeing Traceia (spelling way off), but that scares me because I do not want them to put a tube down her throat for teeth cleaning if that is what is really going on. I was suspose to take her in today for the cleaning, but I reschedualed for next Monday. I am buying a little time so I can maybe get a second opinion.

I really don't think it is reverse sneezing. My Gizmo used to do that, this is totally different. It kinda sounds like the collapsed Trachea to me. She sounds really hoarse when she gets excited. I am getting really upset with my current vet. I would like to take her to UT for testing but I need a referal for that.

how old is your dog? panting is from pain. DD did great with her dental although she lost 6 teeth and she is 5 - the dentist recommended getting them done at age of 3 so if your dog is near that age get it done if vet noticed this - do you see tartar on teeth? do you see inflamed gums? I tried the petzlife gel for a year with my demi trying to do the same thing you are talking about and i should have done dental the year prior as due to this my demi lost 27 teeth - if they see it is a problem get the dental done and save the teeth as i feel horrible i thought petzlife would save us and in the long wrong my delay made it worse as in that year 10 teeth i felt became loose within a week and why i went to dentist asap to try to save them sadly they couldn't and those diseased teeth caused boneloss in more teeth sadly

they can xray the trachea to see if it is collapsed before doing the dental procedure - if it is tell them not to do dental. There are really small tubes they can use and that is really important for small dogs. Are you sure there is no specialty hospital with a board certified dentist. Here is ours Dogandcatdentist.com - Veterinary Dentistry in Los Angeles -- i think there is a link to the dentists all over -- i did a post of 3 videos for the differences will find it and post

I think if you trust your vet you should do the dental.
If there is any amount of tartar build up, it has to come off.
If you are questioning your vet then it's time to find a new one.
How about an x-ray to look at the lungs and trachea?

For anesthesia, if the vet does it right, everything should go fine.

She just turned two in July. I can see tarter on her teeth. I know she needs a cleaning. She will not chew on bones like my boys do. My Trouble's teeth are very white with no tarter. My other boy's teeth are clean too. Tenci just doesn't chew like they do.

I have mentioned to my vet about the collapsed trachea, but he said she was doing that because her gum was infected, but I have a friend who works at Texas A&M who just from hearing the problem from me doubts that is causing her problem. My vet is suspose to be the best in my town for small animals. We don't have any dental vets here. Tenci is also having a problem with her hair falling out, but my vet doesn't address that at all.

He does use the safest anthisia (spelling) to put them under, but she is only 2.5 lbs, and I am so afraid something will go wrong. She is my princess. I lost my Gizmo over a year ago from a liver shunt that if it had been addressed sooner he would have had a better chance at survival, but my vet told me for two years that he did not have a liver shunt. I guess that is why I doubt him now.

I would really like to change vets, but in this area I just do not know where to go.

Thanks again to everyone who has replied and tried to help me with this.
I am actually thinking about taking her to the after hours emergency clinic this evening. I know they will X-ray her for me. I dont know what else to do.

it could be hypothyroid as hair loss is tied to that as well also dogs get tired and lethargic with that. I am not liking the vet if he did not listen about the liver shunt issue he is not up to date on yorkie breed.

My other concern if the coughing sound is not similar to any of these is her heart - does she have a heart murmur because she gets winded, pants and coughs that is concerning to me as may be tied to heart if it does not sound like any of these.

I hate to say it but i would look for a new vet after what you are saying about the liver shunt dog you have as sorry he is way out there saying a cough is tied to a gum infection sounds like he just wings it to me
