| Poor Baby, but I can't win the flea battle My 3 pound yorkie and I just moved to the beach, and we have been battling fleas. I gave him advantage 3 weeks ago, but it only helped for about a week. I am worried about giving him too many treatments, because it can irritate his skin. I have been bathing him every other day with shampoo with flea medicine, and I have been using a flea comb too, but he is still itching, and seems miserable. Tonight when I was brushing him I noticed his neck is raw... Like he has itched all the skin off. I feel horrible. How can I win the battle against the fleas? I don't want to overload him with chemicals and it is really expensive to keep buying advantage every other week. Please help. Also what should I do about the raw chest? **Just saw the peppermint Oil post, and will try tomorrow... any other suggestions? |

| We had an awful time with flaes when we lived by the lake. We ended up having to spray our yard with a flea tick spray. But it only lasts a few weeks so had to keep spraying. It helped a lot. |

My furkids Donating Member | natural flea and tick repellent I have posted both of these several times within the past few weeks...They keep getting pushed out...here is one that a member posted quite a while ago and one that I keep posting,...the peppermint oil and water is working for my Mom's dog... It is all natural oils and is applied to the back of the neck ...I haven't had a problem with fleas so I haven't used it. Don't know about you guys but I would rather use something natural on my furbabies than to use something that is chemicals Here it is! Flea be Gone! * Peppermint Oil * Cinnamon Leaf (not Cinnamon Bark) Oil * Lemon Grass Oil * Clove Oil * Thyme Oil * A carrier oil, such as sweet almond or jojoba In a small jar fitter with an eye dropper lid, add 15mLs (1/2 oz) of a carrier oil, one drop each of Thyme, Cinnamon Leaf and Clove, and four drops each of Peppermint and Lemon Grass. Shake well before applying drops to your dog's neck and back, parting your dog's hair so that the solution is applied to the skin. Use five drops per ten lbs of body weight. Do not apply to puppies under 12 weeks of age. Apply as frequently as every two weeks. Alternately, six drops of Geranium, four drops of Peppermint, and two drops of Lavender in 15 mLs of a carrier oil can also be used to effectively repel fleas and ticks or... 15 drops of peppermint oil to 1 cup of water... put in a spray bottle and shake before using...Spray a rag or towel and wipe the dog all over...especially the underside where fleas like to stay. Do not spray directly on the dog __________________

| Excellent post. OP, if you search "natural flea repellant" on yorkietalk there is a wonderful thread which was responded to by several who live in Florida. I'll see if I can find it as well. They use Borax in their homes. (if the fleas are in your house, you'll never get rid of them just by treating the animal). Found it! Check out post 13 and on for info on Borax Check this out too http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/pests/bites2.htm

| Thanks everyone THanks for all the tips guys. I am going to wage a full battle today, and I will let you know how it goes. I put some tea tree oil on him this morning, and it seem to have helped the itching a bit. I am going to treat the house, yard and Tatum too so keep your fingers crossed! |

For the raw chest, have you thought about using an "Elizabethan" collar until he calms down and forgets about it? I am scared of these critters... yuck... my heart goes out to you !

| Please be very careful with the tea tree oil and don't let him lick it.

YT 3000 Club Member | fleas also do not like euculyptus oil, lavender, and also cedar, I have taken the euculyptus oil and put on a few spots on him, you can also bathe them in regular dawn dishwashing soap. Fleas also do not like apple cider vinegar mix with water and spray or put on the dog, just watch out for his irritated spots on his skin. They also do not like dogs that have the extra omega 3 and 6 faty acids in their diet, like salmon oil. |

YT 3000 Club Member | I forgot to say I have some stuff called merry hampsters organic dog salve, it looks like a big thing of chap stick and you just rub it on them, everything in it is natural and some stuff called buddy boo boo from cloud star, chester has very sensitive itchy skin so I find all ways to make him feel better. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i see you have a flea battle on your hands. First things first, stop putting treatments on him. You need to treat your house now, as well as your yorkie. take him into the bathroom and wash him with dawn dish soap. After the bath, keep him in the bathroom so you can start treating your house. Take all his bedding, blankets and plush toys and throw them in the washer. Second take all your bedding and blankets in your bedroom and around the house and throw them in the washer. Third vacuum the crap out of your house. You need to vacuum the floors and the furniture. Fleas hide everywhere (carpets, couches, rugs, throw pillows, etc...basically anything made of fabric). After you are finished vacuuming take the vacuum outside and empty is well away from your house so the fleas can't get back in. Once everything is clean and washed you can let your yorkie out of the bathroom. Since the fleas seem to be realy bad where you are you should get your yard treated as well. Lastly, if this doesn't get rid of your flea problem you may need to pack up and leave for a few hours/days (however long it takes) and flea bomb the house.

| Also you can get some tablets from the pet store garlic and brewers yeast tablets. Has worked wonders for Amelia. The garlic changes the taste of her skin to something they don't like and she hasn't had a problem at all this summer. |

YT 2000 Club Member | Fleas seem to be a huge battle with everyone. My dad is having a terrible time keeping them off his dog as well. I just ordered him a bottle of the ark naturals royal coat express because his dogs coat/skin is in terrible shape. I will let him know that, that will help with the fleas as well as the apple cider vinager mix (i forgot about that). I also want to let the OP know that the advantage you used is not waterproof so the first time you gave your dog a bath after you applied it, you washed it away. Advantix and frontline plus are both waterproof and Ive had good sucess using both.

The only way to stop them is to clean and treat your entire house. You have to wash the bedding and spary the mattress in every room the dog has been in. I wash the carpets and rugs with a rented cleaner (rug doctor)and use the flea cleaner they sell. Spray all the cracks around the molding in the kitchen and every room. It's a all out war and the dog is just a small part of it. Good luck. snow Last edited by snowcrustracer; 07-28-2009 at 02:21 PM. | |
