| Wont stop licking his injured foot, why? Rex has been with a small splint for two weeks and today his been licking his foot none stop. We've tried everything-giving him treats, distracting him but nothing he just wants to lick his foot. Is there anything we can do to get him to stop and why is he doing this? |

YT Addict | its an instinct to lick a wound or anything that hurts them. My little boy last week got his paw stuck in the fence playing with the big dog in the other yard and he got 3 stitches and his paw its all wrapped in gauze and tape. And he keeps trying to lick it and bite the tape off. i bought a dog socks at petco and put that over it but he is still obsessed with getting to it. there is not much you can do but wrap his paw in gauze and tape for he cant get to his wound. or whatever is wrong. if its real bad you might have to put a cone over his head. hope your little one gets better soon Last edited by inabowbina; 07-26-2009 at 09:56 PM. |

| We just gave him some food and that calmed him down but now he went back to his foot. We put the cone as well and his going crazy trying to lick his foot. We took off the spint so his foot can breath a bit its been two weeks and his due for a change tomorrow. I'm just scared he damages more his foot. Thanks for responding to my post. |

YT Addict | is it wrapped? what happened to his foot? i would just leave the cone on his head i know he is probably going crazy but he will give up sooner or later. I would hold him and pet him let him sleep with you and keep your hand over his paw and push his head away when he comes to lick it clame his paw as yours lol.but try and calm him down. He is probably really stressed form having a splint on for so long. |
