Sad My baby has Luxating Patella

They say its a common thing with Yorkies! So my baby is getting surgery tomorrow morning and i'm starting to become a mess, because i have NEVER left her someplace overnight. I was wondering if anyone here got the surgery and what they thought and how their baby was after? I'm sure the Dr. is going to tell me but are there things that I am going to need to know? I just want everything to go wonderful, I just wish I would be put to sleep so I can make it threw this!!!

What are her symptoms and what grade is it?
Is the surgeon board certified?

My Yorkie has it also but it is very mild and doesn't require surgery.

I agree with Ellie May.

The surgeon should be a Board Cert. Ortho Specialist. This type of surgery can be tricky, and you want to have the best of the best doing it.

Most general Vets do not attempt this, as they know it takes a great deal of experience, knowledge and an artistic touch, as once they open up the leg, surprises can creep up

I am surprise that he is having surgery so fast and no one has gone over the procedure and recovery I would be concerned about this...

What Grade of LP does he have?

The surgeon is Board Cert. Ortho Specialist. Its at the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center and I've asked how many dogs he has done especially a 2.6lb yorkie. And from 20 years experience a whole lot. I did look to find the very best and out of calling 15 Vets in the Dallas area everyone told me this place. So I seem very good about the dr.

My girl is at a Level 4 in her back right leg and a level 2 in her back left leg. but we are just going to do the right first and later this year the left. So i'm sure once i get threw this i'll be fine for the next.

He went over it with me but you know when your sitting there and he ask if you have questions your mind goes blank. He just told me she will be staying over night and i'll be able to get her saturday. So i think my mind shut off since i never left her overnight. He did tell me that i need to keep her from jumping things and i have to make sure i work with her leg on therapy every day.

But my question was how did some parents handle this surgery and things that it might be good for me to know just encase i forget something the dr. tells me. I'm sure when I pick her up the dr. will make sure i have everything i need to know but i want to know from a parent who went threw this what they think.

Ok Great - sounds like you do have the Best of the Best.

The first 2 weeks are going to be rough - no lie. She must be contained at ALL times. This is major surgery and she will not understand that she could hurt herself

Do a search here on YT for Luxating Patella

There are sooooooooooooooooo many threads, as there are tons of us that have gone thru it, including me.

I will say, in the end, it is worth it ~ she WILL be a brand new girl and YOU will be amazed at the difference

How did you do the first two weeks?

I'm going to find all the Luxating Patella stories, maybe it will help me.

I have another little Yorkie, and they are really close. How do you keep them off of each other? I mean they sleep together and if one has a e-collar on how do you keep the other from licking the area?

Gosh I just wish it was Saturday!

Roxy had both legs done at the same time. I paid extra for her to stay in the hospital for 3 nights. I had the weekend off and also took off Monday and Tuesday. So basicly the first week I had the professionals care for her.

It was rough. I made a 4 panel box with the expen. I put a flit pillow, pee pads, water and food in there, as well as a bully stick. I kept her on the Metcamp for about 3 or 4 weeks.

I had to do range of motion excercises with her legs. She only walked to do potty (although was allowed more walking as the weeks went by). I carried her all the time, if she wasn't in the expen. I slept in a spare bed, just me and her so I can make sure TJ or hubby didn't hurt her

Yes - read some stories, it will help you

Sadie had the surgery 3.5 weeks ago on both knees and I was a wreck! She stayed in the 24 hour care hospital for 2 nights and if I would have known I would have kept her there one more night. I felt like I was going to do something wrong (i.e. she had stitches no casts and an Elizabethan collar). The first week is the worst but I promise it gets easier! Feel free to PM me with any specific questions but get ready for 6 weeks of recovery. Sadie is not allowed out of a crate unless I am carrying her to the bathroom or she is sitting in my lap. I just transfer the crate from room to room so she is always with me. If you work and can take the first few days off I would recommend doing that for sure!

We just went thru it with Hot Rod and yes, the first 2 weeks or terrible. Make sure that you have an area, the best being a crate so you can keep your little one contained. It doesn't have to be a metal crate, but something small so she cannot roam around too much. My surgeon told me that I could either choose a crate or the most a 3 x 3 area. We did the crate at first.

Initially, you will be the whole world to her. You will need to make sure that you know when she needs to potty, drink water, eat and just some love. Initially I am sure that her pain meds will make her sleepy but just make sure that you give her lots of reassurance as she does not know what is going on. After a few days if she is feeling better, you can choose to hold him more. At first I was really afraid to hold Hot Rod as I didn't want to hurt him. Hubby was able to have him across his arm supporting him from underneath, my arm wasn't long enough.

In my situation I eventually let him stay on the table that folded down between my sofa with a short leash (lanyard) on that I held the entire time so I knew he couldn't escape. We crated him at night and brought him upstairs with us to sleep, I monitored him as he has not been crated for over a year. He got up a couple of nights to potty so I had to get up and let him out.

You will need to make sure that your other yorkie keeps off of him, no if's and's or but's. I know that it will be hard, we had the same thing going on. Maggie just wanted to play with her brother. I don't know how to answer your question about the other one licking the incision, but you need to make sure it stays clean. If you are not liking the idea of a plastic e-collar, I am selling soft e-collars. I made these out of Hot Rod's surgery. He was able to sleep and eat and wear it without having to take it off.
I was told it would be 6 weeks of recuperation...strict 6 weeks!!! I know it is a long time, but just keep thinking of the outcome, it will be worth it once your little one can run around without any issues.

Hot Rod's surgery was 3/31/09 and he is still picking his leg up and favors it a little. The surgeon said that he was good to go and he is just remembering pre and post surgery. I am sure that Maggie May jumping on him has a lot to do with it as well. But overall he is doing really well.

I would recommend that you write down all of your questions, leaving room for answers. As you go down your list, jot down the drs answers. Write down anything and everything he tells you. Like you said, you can't remember all what was said after a certain point, this way, you will be able to get some of your questions answered and know what is expected. Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions. I know that you can do this, the surgery is probably (for me) 85% of the anxiety. Once your baby is back in your arms, you will be a whole different person and you can focus on her recovery and giving her lots and lots of lovins. You can do this, you are stronger than you think, your baby needs you.

Here is a link to my thread after his surgery. It has graphic pictures in it so just be a little prepared if you decide to read it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...picture-b.html

Check out my "The Softee Collar" if you are looking at an e-collar, it is much more humane than those darn plastic cones. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ne-collar.html Hugs to you. What is your baby's name?

Thank you so much for both experiance, and after reading the other thread I feel better. trying to get everything ready for her so that I can handle this is going to be really hard. The dr. said that she (Yudi is her name) will be able to feel whenever I am worried so I have to stay strong (wish me luck on that one).

I'll defi keep Umbe the other one away from her since, this past week she was at the dog park and pulled on her leash because she was running after my boyfriends kids in which caused her back paw to bleed. So I about 10 mins later I'm at the vet leaving with a bandage on her leg and an e-coller on and trying to find a spiecalist because my little one's starts to limp. SO...DO I FEEL LIKE I'M A GREAT MOM RIGHT NOW!

Do you make e-collars for 2 1/2lb -3lb dogs? Because I might be interested!

You are right I will have to keep thinking of the outcome, Its just so hard since she looks fine right now when her leg isn't bugging her and that you know tomorrow she will be in pain.

You said you had both back legs done at the same time... She is only getting one done since the dr. recomends just one at a time so boy do i look forward to later this year Do you think that doing it at the same time was easier?

Good idea on writing the questions out before, My mind is so on tomorrow morning i didn't even think of it. I was balling when he told me that she would spend the night. It's going to be a long friday.

Here is some pictures that i want to share of the girls at the moment:
Yudi is the one on her back with her belly waiting for some attention and Umbe my poor baby with the e-collar on is sleeping since the kids are at the pool.

Awww, Umbe and Yudi are absolutely precious! Just be strong, she will be home before you know it. lol, I think I called the hospital at least 3 times through the night. Fortunately I got a different person each time so at least the same person didn't get tired of me calling.

Yes, I can make a collar for a 2 1/2 - 3 lb dog. I just need a couple general measurements. Just pm me if you are interested in a collar. Good luck tomorrow and everything will be fine. Hugs.

Cry

So I finally got an update on Yudi and she is waking up and doesn't feel the pain which is great! But the Dr. did freak me out mentioning that her blood pressure dropped from 75 to 40 right before the operation and he couldn't move forward until her blood pressure was normal (now in my mind i don't know why he had to say this, because I went from happy to crying in 2.1 sec.). I'm so glad she is in the best place she can be.

But he said she is doing amazing and because she is such tiny dog we will keep an eye on her all night.

All I want to do right now is hold her, and just be next to her all night. I just pray she will be better than ever when I pick her up tomorrow morning.
