| Seizures after rabies shot Hallee (4.9 lbs, 4 yrs old) got her yearly rabies shot today, everything was fine until about midnight. I was laying in bed and heard something weird, looked over and she was flopping all around like something was wrong it appeared as if she was having a seizure. Picked her up and we headed to the vet. She was ok after about 5 minutes or so but then had another one about 10 minutes later on the way to the vet. They did some blood work and everything appeared to be fine. Gave her something to relax her and sent us home with some liquid phenobarbatol in case she had another one. She is also supposed to take 1/2 of a phenobarbatol tablet every 12 hours (3 total). Has anyone else ever had this happen? We are so worried she is going to have another one. This was definately her last rabies shot.

rabies is a 3 years vaccination and the 3 year is the same as the one year - only titer your dog for everything now read up on this About the Rabies Challenge Fund i am furious right now -- the dose is for a 90lb dog - find a holistic vet as many will not give the full dose to a tiny dog. Your vet should have known better and obviously not up on the latest information and not up on toy breeds I feel so bad for you and your baby sadly we as pet owners have to educate ourselves to protect our dogs | |

| i think if the vet was doing this yearly for 4 years your lil ones body could not take anymore -- call animal control and find out what the requirement is for your county as every county is different. I am so sad right now this breaks my heart. I would seek out a holistic vet as they may be able to give you something to cleanse the body of the toxic dose your baby got -- I think they use nosodes to do this |

If your state does not and your vet is still insisting that it be done that way, there are lots of other vets out there... To the OP: Who knows. The vaccine is waaaaaaaay too potent to begin with. Is her liver perfect? Ever been bile acids tested? I just think these are too much for small dogs. It is very sad.

| How scared you must be. I would be. Please find out what the protocol is in your state. Some are every three years some every year. NY is every three but my old vet insisted in giving the rabie shot every two years. I dropped him and went to another who follows the AAHA protocol and gives the rabie shot every three years. Unfortunately that is one shot we can not not give them. It's the law. Prayer's coming for your little one to be ok. I would definately find a vet that would give the vaccine according to her size. These shots are out of control. |

| 1 thing that i noticed with my dog after taking the shot was she became a little lethargic but after a day or two she's ok again.

| I have seen on some sites that it could be liver related? Just check it out, there is so much information out there. Don't just count on the medicine to stop her from the seizures. Find out why, was to shot to strong? Is there something going on with your baby? But I wouldn't get another rabies shot for her. |

| What is the Teapot Club? My Yorkie is 10 lbs. Is that a Teapot? I know she is not a Tea cup. Sandy |

YT Addict | I hate rabies shots too. I don't understand why people get them for little dogs when they never leave their house most yorkies have different life styles than the bigger dogs that do need them. My poor kitty died from a rabies shot i miss him so much. He was a indoor cat too i wish i never did it i felt pressured though by my vet and everyone telling me it was the right thing to do. I should have listened to my gut i was the only one he had to speak for him. I really wish you the best i really do. |

| I am so sorry this happened to your furbaby. Hopefully, everything will be okay. We have never had that kind of reaction to the rabies vaccine, but Piccolo did have a different type of reaction. So, no more rabies vaccine for Piccolo, either. She just had a titer test instead, last month. Shockingly, the vet told me anything greater than 5 (whatever that means) was good, and it was greater than 900! So, I think that means she has enough immunity for the rest of her life. I am sure it would work that way for your furbaby, also.
