Default Reaction to Lepto Shot?!

My dog got his second dose of lepto today in his hind left leg. We brought him home and he was fine, very upbeat and acting normally. A few hours later, he has been lying down and will not come out of the kennel. When we take him out, he walks around with his back left leg up, as if almost limping. He didn't react this way the last time (I don't know where the vet gave him the shot the last time, I wasn't in the room). Is this normal? Anyone know what I can do about this?!

I had one that had a violent reaction to it but she was vomiting. I had to take her back and they gave her a shot of something else. Sorry, I am not much help.

I hope he is ok now. I don't get mine the Lepto because of so many bad reactions people have had.

It definitely sounds like he is sore.
I was quite concerned about giving mine the shot too, however several severe lepto cases have been diagnosed right in my area. So before he got the shot, I had the doctor give him a steroid and then I stayed an extra half hour at the vets to make sure that no side effects would arise. I have one of those great vets that will call you after hours just to check on your pup.

I would try to keep him as still as possible and allow the injection site/ muscle to rest. It should not take long for him to heal.

I didn't let mine get this shot...matter of fact my vet won't give it to yorkies...or any toy dog.

He may need some steriods to help with inflammation. It doesn't sound like a bad reaction to the shot but I never give lepto. Most vets who treat yorkies don't give lepto

Our vet told me the pros and cons of the lepto shot and left the final decision to me. He also felt that since he is not an outdoor dog that he really shouldn't need it. After reading about all the bad reactions to the vaccine, I opted not to give it to Pepper.

Two out of three of my dogs have had the Lepto vaccine with no problems.....here in RI, Lepto is a common disease that is hard to diagnose. If my dogs run in the yard and there is a damp puddle with squirrel or raccoon urine on it and the dogs smell it, they could get sick. I have had it out with my vet over giving it to the third and he says that it is a risk benefit analysis that weighs greatly in favor of giving the vaccine.

As for breeders who say no lepto in their contract-- I say -- after the sale, it's none of your business what the owner does with their dog beyond the small window of time that you are guaranteeing the dog for health which I'm sure would not extend for more than a year, if that. Not to be rude but breeders are not veterinarians.

No, we are not vets, but work with our vets very closely. And as said my vet has told me, every smart vet has numbers for breeders that you can turn to. We go to school, but we are not specialists in every breed.

As far as a gurantee, well there is more on our contracts that just cover genetics and health issues. We build a relationship with our new families and have a close relationship with them the entire life of that pup. The concern is for the pup. I have pups that have been away from for years and I recieve monthly, if not weekly updates on my pups.

Of course we all want what's best for our Yorkies or any other pet.
I also was very concerned about the Lepto. Buddy got so sick last
year, having had it since he was a pup, however the stupid vet gave
him all his shots together last year, hence intensifying the Lepto and making him
very sick. I switched vets this year and told the vet about the Lepto
and asked him if he really needs it. His answer was, the risks in our
area far outweigh the risks of this shot if the dog is walked outside
daily. He stopped giving it for years but has recently started again
since Lepto cases has been reported three years in a row. He left
it up to me to decide. I took Buddy back two weeks later, last Thurs.
to have it done seperately, no reaction. This desease is a scary one
since Lepto can be transmitted to a human. There are many wild animals
living in the woods surrounding my Condo. If my vet says I should really
consider it then that's good enough for me.
It's important to evaluate the area in which you live. That should
answer the question of should I or shouldn't I.
As far as a breeder telling you in their contract you can not give
your new pup the Lepto shot I would find another breeder.
They take the risk of breeding, which can turn out to be devestating at
times but they continue to breed. Something as serious as this shot
and depending on the area in which you live, should be left up to the
owner and their vet, IMO.

the reason they do most vaccinations in legs and i hate even saying this is because if it causes cancer they can remove the limb sadly. The adjuvuncts in the lepto vaccine will trigger the allergic reaction. Lepto is the one shot that most dogs have a bad reaction to. Also there are so many strains of lepto that this vaccine does not cover them all so your dog is still at risk so i would not recommend lepto and as long as you stay away from still water should be ok.

I had a dentist tell me a dog went lame in leg after dental vaccine in a dog yet she wanted to give my dog this vaccine so we went to another dentist who is against this vaccine as no real proven results and only been around for 2 years and side effect is going lame in leg. It is not uncommon for vaccines to react this way so i would call the manufacturer of the vaccine and find out the side effects as this could be what you are experiencing as well
