I also was very concerned about the Lepto. Buddy got so sick last
year, having had it since he was a pup, however the stupid vet gave
him all his shots together last year, hence intensifying the Lepto and making him
very sick. I switched vets this year and told the vet about the Lepto
and asked him if he really needs it. His answer was, the risks in our
area far outweigh the risks of this shot if the dog is walked outside
daily. He stopped giving it for years but has recently started again
since Lepto cases has been reported three years in a row. He left
it up to me to decide. I took Buddy back two weeks later, last Thurs.
to have it done seperately, no reaction. This desease is a scary one
since Lepto can be transmitted to a human. There are many wild animals
living in the woods surrounding my Condo. If my vet says I should really
consider it then that's good enough for me.
It's important to evaluate the area in which you live. That should
answer the question of should I or shouldn't I.
As far as a breeder telling you in their contract you can not give
your new pup the Lepto shot I would find another breeder.
They take the risk of breeding, which can turn out to be devestating at
times but they continue to breed. Something as serious as this shot
and depending on the area in which you live, should be left up to the
owner and their vet, IMO.
I never tell a new owner that they cannot give it but, I do not recommend it. I place a copy of Dr. Dodds recommended vaccine Protocol in their baby books for the new owners to go over. In the end it's as you say, the area in which you live and what you and your vet decide is best for your pup, but you have the ultimate say over your pups care. There are Vet's that are a bit vaccination crazy, they do make money on vaccines.

Yes it is good to check with the vets in your area and i would call a few to see if they have confirmed cases of lepto. If you have to give make sure to give 2-3 weeks from other vaccines. Also, remember vaccines are only to be given to HEALTHY DOGS. Not dogs who have poor immune systems. While very rare a vaccine can cause a dog to get the disease if they have a poor immune system. Luckily in california we do not need this. We see dr jean dodds for our blood work and titers and she is excellent. We titer with ours but mine have health issues.

I apoligize in misreading what you stated your contract say's.
Yes, I agree with you regarding innoculations, hence, my decision for a new
vet that follows the protocal of the AAHA. My old vet, who I liked very much
is vaccination crazy it seems. Will not even give the titer's test!
I wish I did not have to get this shot for Buddy but I would feel horrible
and never live with myself if he were to get Lepto. If I lived in the city
he would not be getting this shot. Taking into consideration the area
where you live and checking with your vet as to any cases being reported
should help you in deciding to get it for your pet or not.

If vet's would realize that by promoting titers is really more financially lucrative for them than pushing vaccines our dogs would be better off.

i think more important calling around and checking with other vets and specialists in your area as some vets are lazy and old school and do not stay up on things and educate themselves and just keep vaccinating dogs yearly when it is needed only every 3 years or to titer. If your vet does not titer then they are not up on the latest technology as my dogs have been titered for 4 years now and still have their vaccinations in the system. These dogs are tiny and to keep pumping in vaccines that are unnecessary is not right in my opinion and just asking for trouble. My dd has hypothyroid and horrible allergies all which started after her original vaccinations. Breeder asked me not to vaccinate her but i did what vet said and what i felt safe - i think breeder knew her line had poor immune systems sadly and now for 5 years my dd has been a mess. I think get the orginal puppy vaccines then titer every time you have blood drawn i add the titer. I would rather spend the money on titering as more expensive than in paying for vet bills in an unhealthy dog and watching a dog suffer the side effects of it.

yeah but most do not take the time to educate themselves and listen to big pharma so who knows they make more on vaccines as vaccines are probably cheap and they have a profit in it more than titering as the labs get most of the money for titering i think.

I'm sorry your little guy had a reaction. It's always tough to see them down.

As owners we all have to make tough choices on what to vacinate against...and when... it's easier when you have a vet you trust and you can discuss option.

All my girls are vacinated against Lepto. We just have cases in my county diagnosed...just saw a vet tech tweet about it last night.

Tatum has never had a reaction to her lepto so I really can't help you...... yes, she does get it because of reported cases in our area. She's a "country dog" so she comes into contact with things that your average house dog may not. This is why my vet highly recommends it. I'm very lucky she's done fine with it.

Hope yours feels better soon!

i didn't know there was even a choice involved, this vet just said we are doing a lepto today and i'm like 'ok'. in all fairness i'd like my dog, and any future dogs to get it, i'm not real vaccine savvy, but i do know my husband who lived here all his life, had a dog when i met him, who was only 4, and passed away from lepto. it was HORRIBLE, he spent so much money fighting to keep him alive, but all his organs started failing, and it was a very traumatic event for us both, and so i know lepto CAN happen, and is devestating in it's effects, it took down a HUGE bull mastiff, so....i can't even imagine a yorkie.

out of all the dogs he had only one was affected but one was enough if you knew that sweet dog, it was horrible and i only knew him a short while. at any rate, we have a big school yard in back of our home, passed the fence. there are feild mice, and that is where they believe it came from, so that problem is out there so i guess for us, it has to be worth the risk, but the vet did NOT say anything about lepto being bad, for small dogs or yorkies, or anything like that, and he didn't say it was dangerous in any way, shape or form. all that i did differently was sit in the office for 15 minutes, in case of a reaction. just like when you get your babies vaccined, you gotto watch their reactions, i guess it was the same w/ this shot. no reaction at all. we go back in three weeks, i hope that one is all done, in one part but idk. they do it and give us the bill.

i'm glad daph came thru with flying colors, i would have been soooo nervous if i had read this 1st. i guess if they recommended this b4 i even told them about my husband's dog passing, then there must be other cases nearby, where they advise it because of this.

hugs, michelle
