| Bad Reaction to Lyme Disease Vaccine Has anyone else experienced this? Can you give me info such as how long symptoms will last etc. Sophie got her first of the two Lyme Disease vaccine shots on Wednesday. She acted a little lathargic that night and Thursday bit I didnt think too much about it because the vet warned me this might happen and she was eating good. This morning when I woke up her crate was filled will diarrhea and vomit. She was covered also. I immediately took her outside and she began to ooze a yellow gel from her rectum. I called the vet and brought her in right away. The vet says it is not normal for a reaction to a vaccine to take so long. They put her on three medications and told me to feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice.

| Ahhh poor baby.... Yes do the boiled chicken and rice. I give a little yogurt when mine have to have antib's. Stonyfield (with the picture of the cow) makes a nonfat vanilla with probiotics (it's a little 4 pack). |

| Ohhh...poor Sophie. I hope she is better very soon. We have not experienced reactions to Lyme Disease shots, but it's something that I always worry about. If it weren't necessary living in this part of the country, I would not give it to them. The boiled chicken and rice usually does the trick in a day or two. I would just follow your vet's instructions. Maybe she picked up a virus in the vet's office.

| Thanks everyone for your concern. Sophie is feeling much better today thank goodness!! She has been taking all her medication and has not thrown up or had any diarrhea in 24 hours now. I have also been feeding 5x a day the chicken and rice but very small portions as the vet prescribed. Now I am worried about bringing her back in a month for the 2nd dose. Will she have this same reaction?? I wouldnt even get it but in NJ the ticks are out of control this year and I really dont want to risk her getting Lyme Disease. I may discuss getting 2 more 1/2 doses of the vaccine instead of the whole thing at once. Sophie is a tiny girl. She is only 2.9 lbs

Hi, Do you live in an area that Lyme Disease is prevelant? If so, I understand why you are having your girl vaccinated. However, if it isn't a problem, the vaccination is known to cause reactions on yorkies. However, you might want to try children's Bendryl 1 cc prior to taking her in for her next.

| Yes unfortunatley we do live in an area with high risk of Lyme Disease. I also choose not to use Frontline because of the negative effects it can have. My vet highly recommended the vaccine. Thanks for the info. I will definately try the Benedril before the next one. Hopefully it will work because she didnt really have a reaction until 48 hours after the shot.

| My 1yr old had a reaction to the Lyme shot but it happened within three hours and her face and nose got extemely swollen. We rushed her back in to the vet and they gave her a few shots to bring the swelling down and sent us home. It took a day or so before she felt like her old self. Now I'm really afraid to give it to her again but we have loads of ticks in our area and our vet feels it's important. I'll have to think about this one. |

| I won't give the Lyme to Jemma. she's mostly a indoor dog and I make sure her frontline is right up to date. But I lived up in Pompton Lakes for about 10 years. Lots of mountains, lakes and ticks.

| It is more likely that a dog will react to a vaccine the second or third time they get it, so it is possible that there will be another reaction. She needs to be premedicated. Just remember that infection and disease are different. Just because a dog tests positive for lyme's doesn't mean that they have the disease. They may just be carrying it. This is more common in some areas of the country. In other words, the vaccine is over used. I'm not saying that's the case here but it does happen.
