YT Addict | Yorkie Sick from Sugarfree Gum...Help! My Harley got into a pack of sugarfree gum yesterday evening. He has had diarrehea 3 times so far...the last time almost like water. The last time he pooped it did have gum and paper wrappers in it so I know he is passing it. He doesn't have any other symptoms...he is eating fine. I didn't learn until this morning that it could be toxic to dogs so I immediately called my vet. He didn't seem to worried...just told me to keep an eye on his bowel movements and if he still had diarrehea tomorrow to let them know. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am really worried about my baby. Am I overreacting? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would also call the ASPCA Poison Hotline and ask them about it.

| Definitely dangerous for dogs. Danger signs are seizures, lack of coordination and depression or behavioral change. If you see any of these then I would get him back as soon as possible. The Xylitol in "sugar-free" items causes a serious drop in blood sugar in dogs, consequently causing the symptoms listed above. I would check to make sure that all items that contain this chemical are up high out of the way of snooping noses! Absolutely keep your eye on him for the day. |

| I hope that your baby will be okay. Sugarless anything is poison to them I'd find a new vet, also, since this one obviously hasn't a CLUE Definitely need to get to a vet!

| If xylitol is an ingredient, then yes get hiim to the vet now (and not the one you talked to...). But, what type of gum was it? Maybe it just contained sorbitol.

| We just went through this situation with Chopper...he ate gum with xylitol in it. We were lucky that we caught him in the act of eating it!! I got on the internet and saw the warnings then called my vet immediately. At first the vet didn't seem too concerned and said just to watch him and she would go look through her research and phone me back if she thought it was anything serious. It was less than five minutes, and she called back to tell me to induce vomiting. Chopper ended up being fine, but we found out that he ate 3 pieces of gum which could have caused serious problems if he had digested it. Do you have any idea how much gum was consumed? If it contained xylitol? Or when it was eaten? I would find the ingredient list for the gum and contact a new vet. |

| I know I saw something about Xylitol (a natural sweetener derived from plants) how a very, very small amount can kill a dog quickly! I think it was 2-3 pieces for a big dog, so for a yorkie it doesn't need to be that much---VET NOW! Hopefully as another poster said, it was sorbitol instead...
