| Sick after spaying? Lilah was spayed on Thursday, and has vomited and had diarrhea off and on since,. Last night I thought she was pretty much done, because she hadn't been sick since yesterday morning. But she's thrown up 3 times this morning. She is eating and drinking, maybe not quite as much as usual, but she is getting enough. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it normal? She was at the beginning of her heat cycle when she was fixed, and the vet said she may have some bloody urine, but I wasn't expecting a few days' worth of vomit and diarrhea. |

| i would definitely have her checked out i had the same thing happen to miss buffey after she was spayed except she was eating and playing fine but vomited for almost 36 hours i finally took her to the emergency vet where they ran every test known to man. they finally concluded she had a bad reaction to the pain meds and gave me other meds to give her for about 5 days. she also had to be on a bland diet during this time. they said if i had not brought her in she really could have gone downhill quickly. not to scare you, but i imagine you love your baby as much as i love miss b and i would have died if anything worse had happened to her

| She should see the vet since it's continuing. It would be normal for a couple days because anesthesia can make them nauseous. It is just about impossible to be sure that a dog isn't in pain because some try to hide it. She had a hysterectomy and I would be very opset that pain meds weren't offered. They can even make them sleepy which is good. I'd make sure her gums are pink and see the vet as soon as possible or at least call.

The vet told me to call if it got to the point where I thought she needed any pain meds, but since she's been playing and everything, I figured she wasn't in too much pain, and I was afraid that meds would upset her tummy more. You're right, though. I can't be 100% sure that she's not in pain. I checked her gums and they're good and pink, and her nose is cold and wet. She hasn't been sick in a couple of hours, so hopefully it's ebbing. If she's still sick in the morning, however I will call the vet. Thanks for the advice! | |

| OK, scratch that about not beng sick anymore....she's thrown up 3 times and had diarrhea once in the last 20 minutes. Sorry for getting pretty gross, but I'm gonna try to explain it, so you all can get a better idea. Her vomit is kind of a yellowish color, and very mucous-y, thick and stringy. And now her diarrhea looks like it has gel in it. It's very mucous-y too, I guess you could say, and it STINKS to high Heaven. I have a diaper on her right now, because she's managed to hit nearly every throw rug in the house. Luckily, most of my floors are hardwood. Guess I won't be waiting until tomorrow to call the vet's office. |

| So sorry to hear about your baby being sick! Did you bring her back to the vet? My Kinsey was spay on Wednesday. The vet called me 2 hours earlier than expected to come pick her up because she was whining. She whined from 3:30 pm til 8:15 pm and was so tired she fell asleep. She was sent home with pain meds and when I gave them to her she whined for hours! I think it was the meds. Today I stopped all meds and she is fine now. NO WHINING! Hope your baby gets better soon. I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayers! |

| I called the vet, and he said to hold her food for 24 hours and give her belly a rest. It hasn't seemed to help, though, so I called them back this morning, and we have an appointment in about an hour. I'll update more when we get home. Thanks for all the well wishes! |

| I think that you should ask for some pain meds for the poor baby. Her pain could be stressing her out and giving her the upset tummy as well.

| The vet said that she's still "in pretty good shape" over all, considering she's been sick. She's not dehydrated, and is still strong enough to walk around and stuff. There's no obvious reason that she should be sick...no fever, her abdomen is soft, her eyes are clear and bright, and her nose is wet and cold. Her incision site is pretty much healed already and looks great. Just the vomiting and diarrhea. The vet seems to think that she just has a really sensitive digestive system, and that any stressful situation can have this effect on her. (She got really sick when we got her last year, pretty much the same symptoms, but only worse, she wound up in the hospital) So the vet gave her a shot of Cerenia to help with the nausea, and I'm to give her 1 pill of that every day for the next 4 days. He also gave her an antibiotic. I'm to wait a couple of hours for the shot to be really effective, then give her some Pedialyte. If this doesn't help in a couple of days, I'm to call them back. |
