Yorkie Yakker | 5 week old puppy being sent to new home! I hope this is the right place to post this...if not please let me know where I need to go! I have been informed that a puppy I placed a deposit on has to be picked up this week...She is only 5 weeks old. I know that this is too soon and am scared to death! The story goes the breeder has to leave to go out of town for a family emergency and all of the puppies have to be picked up this week. I have NutriCal, BeneBac gel, and a heating pad in preperation for her coming home @ 8 weeks...not 5 weeks. The breeder said that she is no longer nursing and that she is feeding Ceaser canned puppy food. She has been wormed once but will need to be wormed again...I will have to do this but she is giving me the wormer. She also hasn't gotten any shots because the breeders vet says that she is to small. What do I need to do? I am really scared for her right now and just want to make sure I am prepared for any emergency that may arrise. |

This would scare me a bit too. I've had no experience working with puppies this young without the mom, so I'm not the best person to advise you. I have heard of breeders supplementing with goats milk. Think you may be able to get it in cans. Be careful with the heating pad. Some can get hot spots, so cover the pad wellso she doesn't get any burns. Get her a good cuddle up toy. Your vet should be able to help you figure out details on how to care with this little one. What a shame you have to deal with this. I'll be thinking about you & good luck.

♥ Catherine My Love ♥ Donating Member | Get some goats milk or powdered milk replacer. At her age, she should probably be able to drink it out of a shallow bowl okay. Personally, I don't like giving canned food to any Yorkies as a regular thing, it's mostly water and there isn't much nutrition in it. Plus, for the adults, it's not good for their teeth. But, I digress. How much does she weigh? The wormer isn't hard to give, it's just a liquid they eat - it's supposed to be done once per week for 4 weeks. As far as the vaccinations, the minimum age to get them is 6 weeks. We've been discussing in another thread that 8 weeks minimum is best for Yorkies. You'll want to ask your vet, though, because since the puppy has been weaned already, she isn't getting the natual antibodies from her mother. You are going to want to keep her isolated from any possibility of contact with another dog. This is not a good situation to be in. Glad you've got NutriCal. Do you have a scale so you can keep track of her weight? You want to make sure she is gaining. Also, call your vet to get your vet prepared for the situation. You are going to have a billion questions - please keep us updated and informed! We'll do all we can to help. What is the story with this breeder? How did you find them?

| Its really against the law to let any animal go from its mother before 8 weeks. I agree with the others have nutri cal on hand. Good luck with your little one. |

In Virginia, puppies have to be 7 weeks old before they can be legally offered for sale, here's an exerpt from the Virginia Statute: § 3.2-6510. Sale of unweaned or certain immature animals prohibited, vaccinations required for dogs and cats; penalty A. No person shall sell, raffle, give away, or offer for sale as pets or novelties, or offer or give as a prize, premium, or advertising device any living chicks, ducklings, or other fowl under two months old in quantities of less than six or any unweaned mammalian companion animal or any dog or cat under the age of seven weeks without its dam or queen. Dealers may offer immature fowl, unweaned mammalian companion animals, dogs or cats under the age of seven weeks for sale as pets or novelties with the requirement that prospective owners take possession of the animals only after fowl have reached two months of age, mammalian companion animals have been weaned, and dogs and cats are at least seven weeks of age. Nothing in this section shall prohibit the sale, gift, or transfer of an unweaned animal: (i) as food for other animals; (ii) with the lactating dam or queen or a lactating surrogate dam or queen that has accepted the animal; (iii) due to a concern for the health or safety of the unweaned animal; or (iv) to animal control, an animal shelter, or a veterinarian. AND C. A violation of this section is a Class 3 misdemeanor.

YT 500 Club Member | What on earth is up with this breeder? I can't believe she's willing to let the pups go so early. I just hope that they were all spoken for ahead of time by families who are willing to care for a 5-week-old, and that she's not trying to find sub-par homes for them in a rush. I'd hate to think what would happen if some idiot gets one of the dogs and doesn't know how to take care of its special needs.... Also, will there be any effects on socialization? Isn't 5-12 weeks the time when the pups are learning how to interact with the other dogs in the litter?

Yorkie Yakker | ~ELLIE UPDATE~ I have spoken with the vet this morning and I have an appointment scheduled for 9:30 Friday morning...I will be picking her up Thursday evening. After speaking to the vet, I am feeling a little more at ease. He said that though this is very uncommon, since she is weaned and eating on her own he thinks that she will be just fine. He also said that this was going to be very stressful for her but for me to keep a very close eye on her and that it sounded like I had done everything I could to prepare...Heating pad, NutriCal, Benebac gel, IV fluids, digital thermometer, etc. The only thing for me to do at this point is to purchase a digital scale so that I can keep an eye on her weight. Thanks for all of the advice and I will keep you all posted! |

| Please tell this breeder to board the mom and pups with a Vet. Those pups need to stay with their mom for another 7 weeks. They don't do well when taken away this early.

| Wow. Please tell me your aren't paying a lot of money for this puppy. You will most likely be facing huge vet bills. One night of hospital stay for dehydration is about $800 around here. And things are generally cheaper around here. The risk of hypoglycemia is almost 100% for a puppy that age. I am PRAYING that there is some way to keep this baby with it's momma. Her survival may depend on it. As for selling a puppy at five weeks- WOW. Not only unethical, but illegal. I hope you seek proper legal action. You have to wonder how many time this has happened. She most likely wants them gone before she has to start with vaccinations.

| A Trustworthy, Experienced and Reputable breeder would not let the puppies go before 12 weeks. This 'Breeder' should be told that what she is doing is wrong, not in the puppies best interests and illegal. I hope those babies get to stay with their mother for as long as possible...but somehow I think not...very sad I hope they survive and stay healthy. Please come back and update us.

| Not in all states. i see that in her state it is. Not here in ky tho and they go everyday at six weeks old. but it is very unethical. if there is a true emergency, I can understand it if the buyer is experienced at caring for small animals. Last edited by Sugar's Mom; 04-08-2009 at 03:18 PM. |
