| What is this?! Layla had a little bump right at the top of her leg, and I had felt it for about a month and just assumed it was a little pimple or something. It was tiny. Last week I noticed it felt hard and bigger and i looked and it was scabby, but if I moved the fur the scab just came right off. Then it seemed to have watery blood (brownish on a kleenex) coming out. The next night it was scabbed over again and my boyfriend looked at it, and the same thing, as soon as you moved the fur the scab seemed to come right off and it bled. Tonight it felt huge! I pulled the fur apart to take some pictures (sorry for the bad quality, my camera sucks). Just after taking the pictures I touched it with my nail and a little peice in the middle came off and it immediately started oozing blood from that spot. Tonight and the night my boyfriend looked, Layla seemed to get really antsy. She licked at the spot and then her teeth were chattering. She walked around in circles, sniffing like she was frantically looking for something. Has anyone experienced this before? Should I try to get her to a vet tomorrow? We're leaving town for the weekend. She seems fine otherwise... I don't know what to do! I have no idea what it could be!

| Bump! I just gave her a bath and it now looks and feels more like a blood blister than a giant scab. It's still winter here, tons of snow on the ground, and still no bugs so I don't think it could be a bite. She also hasn't been outside other than out on the deck to go potty. No contact with other dogs lately...

| Can your make the pictures smaller? They are so huge that you cannot see anything.

| Sorry, I just took some better pictures with the close-up option on my camera. They're still not great but a little clearer I think...

| Hmmm? I am not sure but I am very curious of what other might think. I know that when my boys play too rough they get scabby marks but they do not ooze. The second pictures are much better.

| So I got Layla to the vet and she had a look and couldn't figure out what it was. She took her to the back to shave the area and I could hear Layla wimpering. I guess they also put a small cut down the center of it. When she came back the vet told me there was a lot of pus and blood in it but she still couldn't figure out what was causing it. She was squeezing as she was talking and she said "OH here we go!" and this little solid black thing popped out. She looked at it closer and told me it looked like FLY LARVAE!!!! My poor baby! But I have antibiotics for her now and some liquid to wipe the area twice a day to keep it clean. Hopefully it heals well. I'm so glad it's gone!

| It's actually not all that uncommon. If she had a small cut from something before, a fly will use open wounds to lay its larvae in (I work in a hospital and have seen this in people...yup...gross). There are SOME flied that are biting flies which will bite and create and small opening to lay their eggs in. Totally gross, but not unheard of! I was thinking it was an abscess, as I have had all too many experiences with this (my husbands lab, who lives with his parents, had one for a long time and we couldn't get it to heal). Good thing you figured out what it was! Just keep the area VERY clean and keep the hair around it shaved. If hair or dirt gets in there while its closing up, it COULD form an abscess...which isn't fun. Heidi |
