| Spay while in heat? Hi! My Vegas is about 9 1/2 months old and came into heat over the weekend. I've never had a female dog, always males, so all of this is new to me. Can you get them spayed while they are in heat or is it better to wait? I called my vet yesterday & she said yes they can go ahead & spay her but just to make sure no male dogs could get to her. I did a search on here to read up about it and there were suggestions of waiting 2 weeks afterwards. Thanks for any info or experiences you can share with me! |

| My vet charges more if they are in heat. I don't know why. I don't know anything about additional risks.

| It is possible but not as safe. If it was avoidable, I would not spay a dog in heat. I would wait at least 5 or 6 weeks after. the uterus is very fragile during this time and there is a lot more blood to deal with.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hello, I had the same problem with my Daisy. She came into heat before I could get her spayed, but my vet would not spay her while she was in heat. I had to wait until 5 weeks later before I could get her spayed. They say there are a lot more risks to spay while they are in heat.

| Think I will most def wait until after her heat cycle is over. I don't want to take a chance on any other added complications and risks. Daisymae-I have a friend who has 2 rat terriers & their names are Daisy May and Maisy Day, lol, I would get tongue tied trying to call them. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had to be spayed while in heat because we thought she had an intestinal blockage so they did an emergency abdominal surgery and did the spay and did a liver biopsy and intestinal biopsy too. I talked to the board certified surgeon before the surgery and she said the incision would be larger but that she would be fine. If it wasn't an emergency I would not recommend it. Her recovery was longer and it was 2800.00 for all the biopsies, surgery and extra hospitilization and that it was done at the er at night by a specialist.

| WOW, I didn't even know that was possible. I think I would wait also, unless it was an emergency |

| OK, you guys just made me more determined to make the appointment for my 7 month old before it is "too late." Thanks for the nudge. I am so nervous about getting it done, it's like I will put it off and it won't need to be done. |
