| Yellow Mucous Poop-need help! Hi all. My little girl, Sophie had a strange bowel movement this morning. It began as a normal bowel movement than quickly it turned into a yellow fluid with a long mucous strand in it. There was also a formed poop in there also. I've been mixing some boiled chicken in with her kibble and I thought it was that. But now I'm wondering....could she be going into heat? She hasn't been neutered yet. She will be 6 mths old on March 8th. She's scheduled for surgery on March 10th. I've noticed over the last week her bowel movements have gotten softer and softer, but I thought maybe I gave her too much chicken. She also has been sniffing and licking herself a lot over the last week or so. She's not throwing up and she only has 2-3 bowel movements a day. They are were just progresively looser each time until this morning. Any thoughts? I've never had a dog, so I've never experienced a dog going into heat. She ate her normal kibble this morning (no chicken mixed in) drank some water and played and chased the cats as usual. Everything else about her seems normal. I thougth I'd wait till one more poopy before calling the vet. Thoughts anyone? |

| My first thought would be that it's a result of a change in her diet...not at all uncommon. She's not showing any other changes in behavior or experiencing any other problems? |

| No other changes in her. She seems normal otherwise. No listlessness or sleepyness. No vomiting (not yet anyway) She's active and biting my feet as usual! She's not going frequently. It's just when she goes, it's soft. And actually, I didn't even notice that it had an odor when I knelt down to examine it. I used a small stick and that's how I seen this long "noodle" like mucous thing. Along with a formed stool and then surrounded by a yellow/greenish mucuos fluid. |

| Mucousy poo is not uncommon when there has been a change in the diet. Of course, there could be other causes, but that is probably the most likely. |

| Keep an eye on her, and if it continues, consult your vet, as it 's possible that it could be caused by parasites of some sort. Lucy had the same problem, and was given Pro-kolin (probiotics 3 x per day) and some antibiotics because her temperature was a bit high. She returned to normal within about 36 hours. Forgot to add - I took a stool sample, which the vet has sent to the labs, just in case. Results back tomorrow, so fingers crossed!

| Harley has the same thing sometimes if i give him some foods,i have also found that bully sticks really give him soft mucosy poops so avoid them at all costs now.

| Thanks everyone! I just went home (I'm at work) to check on her. As soon as I opened her crate she came barreling out to chase her sibling (3 cats). We went outside and pee'd. She came back in and seems fine. There is no lethargy or sleepiness. She hasn't vomited. She didn't poopy or have diarrhea or anything. She pulled on the leash to try and go visit the neighbor dog. She was herself in all other ways except that one morning poopy. Like I said, her poopy was getting softer and softer over the course of a week until we got to a runny poopy yesterday (1 time in the morning) but it was the normal brown color. Then this morning's episode. She is really smelling and licking herself "down there". And all other dogs seem a bit more interested in her and are smelling her. I have to wonder if she is going into heat also. But I will keep an eye on it. If her next poopy is the same way, then I'll give a call to the vet. Perhaps it's just that my baby is becoming a Young Lady? I hope that's all it is......Thanks..Sophie's Mom |
