| Roxy has scratched her right eye raw Hi Yorkie Lovers I'm new to YT and need some help. My Roxy is almost 2 years old and has had eye allergies like forever. Yesterday I noticed she had been scratching her right eye- it was red. I put some A & D ointment on it and it looked much better this morning. Tonight i just noticed she has scratched it raw- looks horrible. She just got over a bought of what I suspect is Colitis- been on boiled chicken breast and white rice for a few days. I thin maybe rice is the culprit but am not sure. I'm going to put some triple antibiotic on the eye- worked once before, however, how can I keep her from scratching. What can I wrap her paw with that she can walk with and not get off! Any suggestions are aprreciated. |

| I would get an e collar until you can get medicine from the vet. Chloe takes Childrens Benadryl to help with eye allergies.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would get her to a vet tomorrow and they can give her something to stop the itching.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would get to the vet right away. Something similar once happened to Wylie - his eye became irritated, then more raw and he even lost a bit of fur - I took him in and was given prescription ointment. Boom, the itching stopped right away. Btw, are her "eye allergies" constant or seasonal or ? Dogs who have symptomatic eyes (from allergies) will often have on/off conjunctivitis as well, and that also needs prescription-level ointment. What were you feeding before the chicken?

| Reply To Wylie's Mom Hi, Roxie has had this eye thing a couple of times. The first time I took her to the vet, was advised she can't be in the wind . The second time I discovered she was sitting next to the heat vent under a chair before the eye got red. Called the vet- told to use triple antibiotic cream. She used to eat ground turkey, brown rice and veggies and her vitamin, Lots of raw carrots, chicken jerky treats and sweet potatoe and fish formula dog treats. She started to itch furiously so we elimnated the brown rice and chicken jerky treats and the itching stopped. We cut down the carrots considerably. Just recently, I stated giving her the tube ground turkey instead of the fresh pack- (it was on sale) I noticed the consistency was very different but it was okay for a few days. I started giving her a little olive oil in her food and scrambled eggs sometimes for variety- she went to the groomers one saturday about a week later and sunday evening she pooped soft poop with a large amount of mucus at the end. I began to feed her chicken breast and white rice. The poop firmed and cleared in about 3 days and the eye got red and the itching started back. That's why I think it was the rice. I completely forgot about the itching from the rice from before. I'm keeping her on the chicken breast, white potatoes, babyfood green peas, and green beans with her vitamin for a while. I may try the fresh pack ground turkey again later. Through all of this her mood and energy level never changed. By the way, her eye is healing, I gave her some clear chldrens benedryl- the itching is gone and the eye looks much better- shouldn't be long before the fur comes back. Incidently before it was both eyes- this time just the right eye- go figure |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm...rice isn't really an allergen, but anything is possible I suppose. Since she had sensitivities to the treats - I would check those (looking back) for wheat/corn/soy, it could be those ingredients in the treats rather than the protein. Even though chicken can be a more common allergen of protein sources, it would be less common than the things I mentioned - but it could even be the chicken. As for that poo, a little mucus at the end may have just been her anal glands emptying, which is a good thing. It may also have been from adding olive oil to the diet. I'm wondering if she could have dry eye - esp. w/ the vet's comment. Then, it gets itchy - she scratches it and the skin starts to get irritated and loses fur (that scenario was similar to Wylie's, but from a diff. cause). Did the vet mention dry eye at all? One more thing, since you're homecooking - are you balancing the cal-phos ratio? If not, it could also be that her system is a little out of balance. Either way, I'm so happy to hear she is improving!!!
