| need help! I am posting this to ask anyone if they have ever had a silimiar situation. I will try to make this short........ My Sam is 11 months old and has been perfectly healthy. On Monday he acted like he did not feel good and had some really smelly rank gas.......which is uncommon for him. Tuesday morning he started to walk with a "arched/humped" back and was in pain so we took him to the vet right away. They took blood..did x-rays and said that it was a GI bug and gave him some shots and medications. By Wednesday morning he clearly was not better so we took him back and this time his AMALYSE and LIPASE were elevated. An ultrasound was done and sent to a specialist who said that he had pancreatitis. Our vet and this specialist said that Sam needed to be in an intensive care facility and that there was one in Milwaukee Wi that is suppose to be the best. So away we went............now Sam is intensive care and they tell us that they have no idea what is wrong with him. And at this time they feel that it is not pancreatitis. His white blood count is normal so no infection...he is dehydrated and growing weaker and we are just about hysterical with worry. That little guy means the world to us.... So was looking for anyone that might have had a similar situation??

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I can offer you no help, but I've read several similar stories, they thought it pancreatitis, then not, then back again. So apparently the testing for this is little complex. My prayers for Sam and you, and I pray for a good diagnosis and a speedy recovery.

| I'm sorry that this is happening. A rise in lipase usually indicates pancreatitis or gi issues or maybe nothing at all. After that came back high, the next step maybe should have been a Spec cPL. Numbers under 200 means no pancreatitis, between 200-400 means possible and over 400 means that's what it is. If it is over 400, there is really no guessing. They saw nothing besides the pancreas issue on the u/s? That is odd that he isn't pulling out of this, especially since he isn't vomiting. Are there ANY other abnormal levels on his blood work (even high or low normal)? With pain, gas, high lipase, high amylase and a u/s confirmation no other disease really makes sense. Are they running blood work for things like EPI?

His Amalyase was 2800 normal is 200 to 1200. They said that the US showed the Pancr. was inflammed but his Rapid for Pancreatis was Negative. He is very nauseated (lots of licking and slober) but is not vomiting. But he is not getting better he is getting weaker. So they are running more blood tests as we speak. The intensive care MD is suppose to call us after 7 with the latest test results. And they were going to do another US. .

| Finally after 7 days and specialists our little Sam was diagnosed with a intra-portal shunt today. My vet send all of his tests and scans to some University that is doing a research study on this and we are waiting to see what the recommendation is~but he told us that Sam's is probably NOT one that they can operate on. I know that some of you have babies with shunts and was wondering how they are and if it has impacted their quality of life? Also my Chloe is from the same bloodlines as Sam. I did some inquiring and was told that their mothers are half sisters by sire........was hoping some of you with breeding backgrounds would be able to tell me if this is a concern?? We are going to have her tested just as soon as things calm down. But for now I am so scared for our little Sam~
