| black tarry stool I need some advice. My dog was neutered last week. He seemed okay afterwards other than the usual soreness. Two days ago I caught him eating cat poop out of the litter box. GROSS. Today he had black, bloody stool. It has only happened once. Could it have been from eating that cat poop? Could something from the neutering have caused this? |

| He needs to see a vet right away. Black tarry bloody stool can be because of internal bleeding

| I agree 100%. It means he is actually digesting the blood which is a very bad sign. |

| That is a sign of internal bleeding. He needs to see the vet immediately.

| Thanks. I called the vet and they told me just to watch him and if it happens again to take in a stool sample. He is acting totally normal so I hope that's a good sign. |

It could be a post-surgery hematoma that bled off a bit. Still, if it were me - I'd be heading to the vet since he's still considered post-surgical.

| He actually just had another bowel movement. It was runny but not black or bloody. The vet said he could have eaten something that upset his stomach and I told her about the cat poop out of the litter box. That's the first thing that popped in my mind when I saw the blood. I hope it was a one-time thing. I guess I will keep watching him since his last stool was not bloody. Thanks for all your advice. This is our first dog and I never realized how many issues a tiny dog can have!!!! |

| Thanks. We just absolutely love him. I have never been a dog person and the only reason we got him was because my daughter who is 10 begged me and I finally caved. He is just the sweetest dog, so lovable. I hope he is okay. He is running around playing right now so I am hoping he is fine. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | With diarrhea, you really want to keep an eye on hydration - they can go down quick and need an IV. So, keep him drinking. Feed a tsp of canned pumpkin for diarrhea or constipation. Make sure gums are pink (not white). If white, force water immed. and give some Nutrical or karo syrup or honey (to get blood sugar up). You may also want to give a bit of yogurt (not artifically sweetened kind). GOOD luck!
