| Something is wrong with my Cisco baby So Friday night we (Cisco and I ) went to bed, middle of the night he woke me up to go out to tinkle and then we went back to bed. When we woke up Saturday morning, he wasnt right. He was walking really slow and not playing and running around like he normally does. He didnt have much appetite for his breakfast but the rest of the day he ate like normal. He has been going to the bathroom normal and letting me know when he wants to go out. I have him sitting on the heating pad a lot and he will switch positions on his own. He is in some pain, when i go to pick him up he squeaks a little sometimes. He is able to move his neck just a little slower than normal. I have no idea what is wrong. He has a vet appointment at 12:15pm today. Im hoping it is nothing serious. He seemed a little better yesterday but now today he is back to what he was like on Saturday. Im so scared.

| Good that you have an appointment with the vet today. I will keep him in my prayers that everything is fine.

| Im not sure where his pain is. On Saturday morning I did a feel over of him, put pressure all over his body and he didnt respond in pain to any of it. When I pick him up and put pressue on his upper belly he seems to squeak a little. When he tried to bite his big brother yesterday because he got too close to his toy, he moved his neck really quick and let out a yelp. : (

| Sounds odd. If the vet is confused and not getting anywhere, I would consider looking for atlanto-axial subluxation/instability. This would be possible with neck pain but most likely it is not the problem. Is he throwing up?

| We are back from the vet... So the vet checked out Cisco and came to the conclusion that it must be one of two things. The first scenario would be that Cisco has meningitis, not the bacterial kind though. The vet said that this type of meningitis is very responsive to steroids and if this is the case, the prednisone she prescribed for Cisco will clear it up. The second scenario would be that Cisco has some type of back injury. She said because he is walking so well and is repositioning himself and going the bathroom normally, etc., bedrest and some doggy perkesets will clear this up. She said the only way to really determine what is going on is to go to Boston and have him seen by a canine neurologist and get an MRI and spinal tap. She said that unless he gets a lot worse, we should just treat him for both scenarios and he should improve and that the trip to Boston would be unnecessary. I just about died when she mentioned the meningitis but she reassured me that if that is the case, the prednisone should do the trick and it is not the bacterial kind people die from rapidly. She said I should relax and that Cisco should be ok but if anything happens to bring him right back. She tested his blood and did a lyme test and everything came back fine. She is going to call tomorrow to check in on him. *sigh of relief* (for now) Thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers!

| That's exactly what I was going to say. Also, many vets are not familiar with this disease, so it's important that a specialist is sought out if that is a possibility.

You can do a search of AAI/AAS Here is a summary of AAI/AAS. I am not trying to scare you, but it is very serious, and unfortunately yorkies are prone to this. It is something to at least know a little about- WHAT IS ATLANTO AXIAL INSTABILITY "SUBLUXATION" ? The neck is made of seven vertebral bones, or cervical vertebrae, which are connected by ligaments. Each vertebra fits precisely with its neighbor to form a joint. The spinal cord is located in a tunnel within the vertebrae, where it is protected from injury. The first cervical vertebra is called the atlas; it holds up the head like Atlas held up the world. The second cervical vertebra is called the axis. The atlantoaxial joint is held in place by several ligaments and by a bony prominence of the axis called the dens, which fits in a hole in the atlas. If the ligaments or the dens do not develop correctly or are injured, the atlantoaxial joint becomes unstable. This is a result of a birth congenital defect meaning your pup got this from the mother or father. Or it can be acquired do to a accident(hit by car, jumped on etc.) This places the delicate spinal cord at risk for injury. Symptoms of spinal cord injury vary with the severity of the injury. Dogs with mild cases may only show neck pain. Those with more severe cases can have an unstable, wobbly, drunken gait and those with very severe cases can be completely paralyzed in all four legs, or suddenly die. Death is often due to injury to the respiratory center in the spinal cord, making the animal stop breathing. Mortality rate is 80% live and 20 % die. Congenital atlantoaxial instability is usually seen in toy breeds less than one year of age. Breeds most often seen for this problem include the Yorkshire Terrier Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Pekingese, and Maltese. Dogs with birth congenital atlantoaxial instability are born without proper ligament support of their atlantoaxial joint, or are born without a dens, or both. The instability that is present can predispose the dog to a major spinal cord injury with only a minor incident, such as jumping off a piece of furniture, shaking their heads. It is really hard to say what minor incident might case these delicate vertebra to become unstable in a congenital AAI/AAS pup. Atlantoaxial instability can also develop in any dog after a major traumatic event, such as getting hit by a car. BLEU BOY BARBER is a great resource for this information as she's been there with her baby, Bleu Boy.

| I am reading this thread and been there with what your babies symptoms are.. YOU HAVE HOPE but you have to get on the diagnosis EARLY! Please get a second opinion and also STAY HERE ON YT and keep us all posted on your babies progress... THE AAI/AAS that has been posted for you .. Please read it study it if your baby shows ONE SYMPTOM do not wait.. I am not good when it comes to this because it was EXACTLY this time last year I went through AAI/AAS I am truly not trying to scare you but I will tell you 3 local vets missed BLEUS DIAGNOSIS.. It took Texas A&M College OF Vetinary Medicine and my persistence to get BLEU BOY well... You are the voice for your pup and I know you love your pup and hate what is happening or you would not be here seeking and searching information ON YT.... I thank YT daily because if it was not for YT the little BOY you see in my avatar would be at RAINBOW BRIDGE and that is a promise.... EVERY INDIVIDUAL TOLD ME HE WOULD die including his surgeon that performed his surgery so it is serious... HOWEVER if you catch it early by research and paw parents who have been through this (MYBABE4ME) VAL is another one ... I learned from her and MORE THAN ANYTHING 2nd and 3rd OPINIONS then you are safe.. Please do not terry with medicine.. I encourage you to click on my name and read all my posts .. Click on my name go to the latest thread and it starts JAN 10th, 2007... THIS TIME LAST YEAR and you will see .. My vet gave me medicine and all that does is mask the pain..... IT DOES not solve the problem... You are more than welcome to PM me for my telephone number to discuss this or I can give you VALS information. We are here for you .... Now with all that said ... IT IS A WORD OF CAUTION ONLY .. I trust and believe this is not going to be what your baby has but if indeed your baby does have this YOU ARE EDUCATED.. IN MY PRAYERS I PROMISE YOU HUGS Vicki Mommy to BLEU BOY BARBER PRINCESS JILL
