| It's official...Spike has Giardia (a few ?'s) My vet diagnosed him yesterday and we started some panacur. I have read that you should use bleach to clean up after his BM's to make sure that he doesnt reinfect himself or infect my other dog. Weeell..what if he goes on the carpet? (we're still house training) Would a product like windex work? I hate to spray bleach all over my floors. Of course on the wood or tile i would, but any other suggestions for carpet cleaning? I have also thought about re-treating with the panacur on my own in about 10 days. I have read here that seems to be a good way to get over the hump. I am very concerned and just want RID of this bug. Any advice would be soo greatly appreciated.

| Uggh, I feel for ya - giardia sucks. My boy is still trying to get over it... his last stool sample came back negative, but his poo still isn't firm, so he may still have it - the giardia doesn't actually come out to be seen in every poop, and half the time they're so small, vets miss them even if they are there! You've got to wash his butt with gentle baby shampoo after ever poop, or else he might lick himself and become reinfected. You have to pick up the poop right away so he doesn't accidentally lick on it next time he goes out, or track it back inside to lick it off his paws later. After you pick the poop up, pour a 10-20% bleach solution over where the poop was. Do this in the house as well, and wash any blankets or clothes he gets poop on in hot water. Get rid of all previous poops in the yard - poop=reinfection. I'd suggest using the bleach solution on your hard floors and bottoms of shoes as well, just in case any teeny tiny bits of poo were tracked inside from before. And IMO - just keep him off the carpet altogether for now. Bleach is the only thing I know of that kills the giardia, which can live for days and only a couple of 'em in an almost-invisible-its-so-small piece of poop can reinfect your dog. My boy is only allowed on a section of the carpet right after he's pooped and we're sure there's no more in there waiting to come out right away - otherwise, he's gated into the dining/kitchen area. Anyways, all that's what we are doing... Nikko's first meds were panacur and flagyl together, then a longer dose of panacur alone, and now he's on a higher dose of flagyl alone. His poops are FINALLY starting to shape up, but they're still not perfect yet. Good luck getting rid of the giardia - sometimes it's easy to wipe out, but often it takes longer than you hope and it's a lot of work to do all that cleaning and bathing. Also be careful because if you in any way eat his infected poo (like he licks poo then kisses your mouth), YOU can get giardia too! So no mouth kisses for awhile. But hey, at least your pup's bum will smell nice like baby shampoo for a couple weeks... Let us know how it goes. :-) Lauren & Nikko |

| Thanks for the baby shampoo tip Actually he had only been here in my home for about 4 days before he was diagnosed, so he only pooped about 5 or so times, once outside. I have cleaned the floors everywhere and I am hoping we caught it early. I will probably graze even the carpeting with a bit of bleach. Only one slightly runny poo, i was shocked to hear he had this. I will continue to be diligent and hope that we get rid of it quick.

| lemonlauren gave you some good tips. Our rescue deals with it getting some of our dogs from puppy mills.... it is YUCKY & STINKY and HIGHLY contagious!!! Watch your other dogs... if they even step in the poo then lick the paws clean... they will need treated...which you knoew from what I read in your post. Hope Spike recovers quickly ... for his booty & your sanity sake !!

| Yeah, you'll be washing his bum at least once or twice a day (we usually end up having to wash 3-4 times a day... remember it's immediately after EVERY poop), so the gentle baby shampoo is necessary - anything more harsh and his butt will start to become raw and hurt. Get ready for poop to rule your entire life for a while! Lauren & Nikko |

| It's a stomach parasite... dogs can get it from licking other infected animals' poo or places where there poo was, and dogs can also get it other ways too... One of the most common that I know of is from stale water, like puddles outside. I think I read somewhere that a large percentage of water puddles outside have giardia in them - so don't let your dog drink out of puddles! It makes your dog have diarrhea in the early stages, and can spiral and become much much worse in later stages - it really makes their tummy hurt and makes them not want to eat or drink. One of the many reasons diarrhea is so serious and needs to be investigated quickly. Older dogs and other animals can carry giardia, but not show symptoms or become sick - but they can infect other animals with their contaminated poo. There's more info out there... my brain is too numb to post all about it, I'm on poo overload after a month of dealing with this... just search giardiasis in google, and you'll find tons of info about dogs getting it and humans as well. :-) Lauren & Nikko |
